Match 08
2nd October 1926
Northampton Town v ECFC

NORTHAMPTON TOWN 2 EXETER CITY 2.

Played at the County Ground, Northampton, on
Saturday, October 2nd 1926.

Exeter City made one change from the side which drew with Brighton a week ago, Lievesley, who last season was the club's top goalscorer, coming in at inside left in place of Dent. Northampton re-introduced their two internationals, Tresadern and Walden. Only a moderate crowd attended the County Ground, about 5,000, and the weather was fine, with brilliant sunshine. Charlton won the toss.

Northampton Town.
Hammond; Watson, and Yorke; Allen, Brett, and Tresadern; Walden, Robinson, Cockle, Shaw, and Edwards.

Exeter City.
Bailey; Pollard and Charlton; Pullan, Ditchburn, and Potter; Purcell, Phoenix,
Blackmore, Lievesley, and Compton.

The Grecians were the first to attack, through Compton and Lievesley, but the move was checked by Watson. Northampton forced matters, and a good combined forward movement left Shaw with a gilt-edged chance, which he accepted, after five minutes. Exeter took up the initiative, and Compton gave Hammond a stinging shot to save.

Neat passing on the left flank puzzled the Cobblers' defence considerably, and the move ended when Phoenix scored from close range. Then, with two minutes to go for half-time, Compton recovered possession and centred to Phoenix, of the bright ginger hair, and he added a second goal. Hammond saved brilliantly from Compton, but Phoenix was hurt and retired. Exeter continued to hold their own, although mostly defending, and twenty-five minutes were left when Shaw headed in from Walden's centre. Exeter were a little lucky to draw, but they played with great determination and some difficulty, for they were short of Phoenix for part of the second half. Compton was the star forward, and a good attack was well backed up by the wing halves and Ditchburn.
