Match 12
30th October 1926
Newport County (h)
Southern League
Torquay U. (a)
NEWPORT COUNTY 2 EXETER CITY 0.
Played at Somerton Park, Newport.
Saturday, October 30th 1926.
Exeter City travelled to Newport today to try and beat the County at Somerton Park, a feat which has not been accomplished yet by any club this season. As many as one thousand excursionists made the journey from Devon by G.W.R. to see how the game went, and to give the Grecians every encouragement. It was a very fine and sunny day, the ground being in ideal condition for football after the rain of this week. Exeter City were unchanged, but Newport were without Bowsher, their local centre half.
Newport County. Maidment; Wetherby and Hinton; Nairn, Connor, and Carney; Johnson, Gittens, James, Drinnan, and Forward.
Exeter City. Bailey; Pollard and Charlton; Pullan, Ditchburn, and Potter; Purcell, Phoenix, Blackmore, Lievesley, and Compton.
Referee: Mr A.Richards, of Bristol.
Nairn beat Charlton in the toss, and the County had the wind behind them in the first half. Exeter started well but Newport forced them back, and Forward, who is a very speedy winger, was fed repeatedly. Pollard rescued Exeter with a good tackle on Drinnan on the edge of the penalty area. Potter was prominent for Exeter and Connor for Newport. Phoenix had yet to do himself justice, for his mistakes were frequent and he could do little right. Gittens with a cross-shot from twelve yards gave Newport the lead after play had progressed for twenty-five minutes. The goal was fully deserved. Exeter improved in the second half and Maidment saved twice from Blackmore, and once from Lievesley. Carney injured his leg and retired from the game. Almost in the last minute Bailey, saving a long kick, failed to hold the ball cleanly, and fell, so that James, following up, had simply to tap it into an empty goal.
