Match 13
6th November 1926
Aberdare Athletic (h)

Southern League
Mid Rhondda (a)

EXETER CITY 2 ABERDARE ATHLETIC 1.
Played at St James's Park, Exeter, on Saturday, November 6th 1926.

Exeter City introduced Walker at inside-left today in place of Lievesley, who has been playing very earnestly in recent games, but has not quite recovered his brilliant form of last spring, when from the centre forward position he got so many fine goals, mostly with headers. The "Darians," who sport the same black and yellow colours as Newport, were the first on the field, and both they and the Grecians found the playing pitch soft but very good for football. Beevor beat Charlton in the toss, and Exeter started facing the St James's Road end. There were six thousand spectators.

Exeter City. Bailey; Pollard and Charlton; Pullan, Ditchburn, and Potter; Purcell, Phoenix, Blackmore, Walker, and Compton.

Aberdare Athletic. L.Evans; Walsh, and Baynham; Brophy, Beevor, and Edwards; Callaghan, Burnham, Jones, McCrorie, and James.

Referee: Mr J.V.Pennington, of Blackburn.

It was a quiet afternoon, as regards the weather, but Evans was inclined to think it stormy when from well outside the penalty area Blackmore fired in a glorious surprise shot which threatened to enter the net at the top corner. Evans saved by tipping the ball over the bar. And when the Grecians came again he fisted out another splendid drive, by Compton, and later saved from Potter. Ditchburn and Pollard were prominent in defence for Exeter, and Aberdare seemed a much better team than their lowly League position indicated. Exeter took the lead in eleven minutes, when Blackmore coolly shot home a return pass from Compton. Evans dived too late to stop Blackmore's swift ground shot. Evans saved by the post from Phoenix, and Walker's clever manoeuvres caused the visitors some anxiety. From a through pass by Phoenix, Blackmore bored his way through, but the shooting angle was too acute, and Evans made a sensational save on the goal-line. A well placed free kick by Pullan was saved by Evans. Eighteen minutes before the finish Jones equalised; the outcome of indecision by the City defence. A succession of corner kicks fell to Exeter, and in the last minute of play a free kick on the edge of the Aberdare penalty area was lobbed against the upright by Charlton, and Phoenix followed the ball into the net. It was the poorest game seen at Exeter this season, and Aberdare enjoyed a lot of luck, particularly in the way of the referee's decisions. The goal scored in the last few seconds of play from the free kick by Charlton, therefore, was a highly satisfactory ending to the match.
