Third Division:- Gillingham v ECFC

GILLINGHAM 3 EXETER CITY 2.

Played at Priestfield Road, Gillingham.
Saturday, November 13th 1926.

Gillingham, having secured only one point in their last six matches, made some changes in their team to meet Exeter City today. Rutherford, who is unwell, was replaced by Rogers at centre half, Marshall moved from inside right to take over from Rogers at right half, and Brown took Marshall's place in the attack. The City's defence was unchanged, but McDevitt and Lievesley were preferred to Phoenix and Walker as inside forwards.

Gillingham. Ferguson; Robertson and Pickering; Marshall, Rogers, and Nichol; Meston, Brown, Amos, Arblaster, and Foster.

Exeter City. Bailey; Pollard and Charlton; Pullan, Ditchburn, and Potter; Purcell, McDevitt, Blackmore, Lievesley, and Compton.

Referee: Mr F.W.Reeve, of Devonport.

Rain was falling in torrents when the game started, and the ground was in a very bad condition. The grandstand was fairly full, but very few people braved the terraces. Charlton, by winning the toss, secured the advantage for Exeter of a very strong wind. After five minutes' play a slip by Bailey let Amos in to score. Blackmore in the twenty-third minute equalised following smart work on the Exeter left wing, but twelve minutes later Amos restored Gillingham's lead. There was no improvement in the conditions when the second half started, but the City, though facing the wind, had the benefit of the slope. Gillingham, however, were the more assertive in this half, and Amos headed the third goal for them, which also completed his "hat-trick." Five minutes from the end Purcell beat Robertson and centred to Compton, who put the ball into Gillingham's net with a hard drive which appeared to go through the goalkeeper's legs.
