Match 15
20th November 1926
Western League:- Torquay U v City Res.
&
Third Division :- ECFC v Watford

EXETER CITY 2 WATFORD O.
Saturday, November 20th 1926,
at St James's Park.

Watford without Williams, for so many years their brilliant goalkeeper, and now with Brighton, seemed a very strange quantity at St James's Park today. Yates, an understudy to Dick Pym at Bolton last season, now keeps the Watford goal. Exeter lacked the services of Ditchburn, whose knee was injured at Gillingham a week ago, and Pool played centre half. Dent was preferred to Lievesley at inside left. Thousands of tons of rain had fallen on St James's Park during the week, and so heavy was the rainfall early today that the groundsman had to probe the turf with a fork in places to get rid of the surface water. Happily, the weather brightened up in the course of the morning, and the match opened in light showers. A crowd numbering about 5,000 saw Charlton win the toss, and the match was started three minutes early.

Exeter City. Bailey; Pollard, Charlton; Pullan, Pool, Potter; Purcell, McDevitt, Blackmore, Dent, and Compton.

Watford. Yates; Prior, Fletcher; F.Smith, E. Smith, Strain; Stephenson, Rand, Edmonds, Foster, and Daniels.

Referee: Mr R.O.Rees, of Swansea.

Compton scored for the City after eight minutes, receiving from Purcell. Yates saved brilliantly from McDevitt, and Blackmore just missed the goal with one of his typical left-footers, having been cleverly put through by McDevitt. Edmonds went close for Watford, his shot hitting the post and rebounding into play, the ball being cleared by Charlton. Eighteen minutes of the second half had passed when Purcell got away on the right wing and centred for Blackmore to crash the ball into the net well wide of Yates. Yates made a point-blank save from Blackmore when a goal seemed certain, and the goalkeeper further distinguished himself by keeping out good shots by Compton and Dent in the last few minutes.

TORQUAY UNITED v EXETER CITY RESERVES.

Western League match at Plainmoor.

Pool and Dent having been selected for the chiefs, Down (right half) and Lievesley (centre forward) played for the Reserves. Rice conceded a free kick, which Good put high over the bar. Lievesley, with a long shot, brought Bayes to his knees, and a series of good centres came in from Newman, but his fellow forwards were not on the mark with their shooting. Andrews scored for Torquay, but two goals by Lievesley put the Grecians in front at half-time. Hughes equalised with a penalty for "hands," and further goals were registered by Andrews and Marlow.
Result:
Torquay United 4 City Reserves 2.
