Exeter City 0-1 Crystal Palace

Saturday, March 6th 1926.

Referee: Mr A.J.Attwood, of Newport.

City:- Bailey; Pollard, Charlton; Pullan, Potter, Myers; Matthews, McDevitt, Blackmore, Lievesley, Compton.

Palace: Callender; Little, Cross; Hamilton, Coyle, Greener; Harry, Blakemore, Cherrett, Hawkins, Clarke.

The first half, although fast, was largely without form. Crystal Palace played the long-passing game well, and after missing two chances Cherrett scored. The old Argyle leader received the ball from Hawkins in the penalty area, and made no mistake with his shot, which passed into the net well wide of Bailey.
The Palace, well led by Cherrett, played like a winning side after they had scored, whereas Exeter worked hard but were badly lacking in method. A prolonged Exeter attack petered out, and the Palace rather easily dominated the second half for most of the time. Exeter's play was for the most part sadly lacking in fire and too often wanting also in intelligence. Matthews and Compton were in form, but the rest, except Bailey, put up a very poor display.

WESTERN LEAGUE:
BATH CITY v EXETER CITY RESERVES.

The Reserves opened brightly and took the lead after 20 minutes, Kirk scoring with a well placed shot into the top of the net. Ten minutes later Bolam added a second goal. Two minutes after the start of the second half Kirk rounded off the scoring by getting Exeter's third goal. Apart from the goals there were three penalty kicks awarded and all were missed. Dalziel for Bath City shot wide from the first, and in the last few minutes Kirk missed twice for Exeter, shooting wide from the first and having the second saved by Neale. Crompton was in excellent form for the Grecians, controlling the centre of the field in his usual classy fashion.
Result: Bath City 0 City Reserves 3.

  • Jack Garratt, the Torquay United centre half, has been transferred to Exeter City. Before joining Torquay he was with Everton for two seasons, subsequently joining Chesterfield, then Pontypridd.

THE DEVON PROFESSIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP

Plymouth Argyle v Exeter City

In view of the Christmastide results in the Exeter City v Plymouth Argyle League games, altogether exceptional interest was taken in the Three Towns in the Devon Professional Championship final, which was played at Home Park this afternoon. The Championship competition was established in 1922 on behalf of the funds of the Devon County F. A., and is triangular. In this season's preliminary round Torquay United were knocked out by Plymouth Argyle.

CITY

In the final of the Devon Professional Championship at Home Park, before 2,500 spectators, the Argyle had Taylor for Craig in goal, and Pullen at centre forward. The new player, Fred McKenzie, from Newport County, was at centre half. Exeter reintroduced Kirk, who played at inside right, with McDevitt at centre half.

The Argyle in the first half had the advantage of a brilliant sun and a boisterous wind. The Grecians, however, were the first to become at all dangerous, but were repelled by Titmuss. A series of raids by the Argyle left wing resulted in Pullen getting
in some deft touches, but the City defence was sound. Exeter were in fact the first to score. From a lengthy centre from Compton the ball came to Lievesley, who promptly netted. Stung by this reverse the Argyle rallied, and for a time were well on top. Then Exeter, with Kirk ever prominent, came again, and both Livingstone and Titmuss wavered under the heavy pressure. The score at half-time was: Argyle O Exeter City 1. After the interval Compton scored a second goal for Exeter City and Pullen obtained one for the Argyle.
Result:
Plymouth Argyle 1 Exeter City 2.

Sponner Cup Final
City Reserves v Argyle Reserves

While the seniors were playing for the Devon Championship, the annual "Spooner Cup" final was being held at St James's Park, between the Reserves of Exeter City and Plymouth Argyle. The afternoon was fine, and there was an attendance of just over a thousand.

Play ran in the Grecians' favour for some time, their backs playing very strongly and keeping the ball well down the field. Nevertheless Logan missed a great chance of opening Plymouth's account when the ball was swung over to him by Corcoran, the shot going very wide. Bolam skimmed the Argyle crossbar with a powerful drive, and again the Argyle should have scored when Corcoran headed across the front of Exeter's goal, but Logan missed the ball and Wallace was far too slow. After Potter had struck the upright Exeter went ahead from a corner placed so well by Bolam that Casson was left with an easy task to head the ball into the net. He made no mistake. Seventeen minutes remained for half-time, and during this period Lee held a dangerous header by Potter, and Wallace at the other end fired hastily over the bar when well placed. In the second half Logan equalised for the Argyle, and the result in the end was a draw, one goal to each side.
