Match 34
20th March 1926
Southend United (h)

Southern League Cup
Barry T (a)

Exeter City 0-1 Southend United

Saturday, March 20th 1926.

Urgently in need of Football League points, Exeter City were this afternoon opposed at St James's Park by Southend United, the club which caused a sensation in round four of the F.A.Cup Competition by defeating Derby County with a lot to spare. Jack Garratt, the centre half from Torquay, made his bow to the Grecians' following for the first time in Exeter City colours. He played a sound enough game at Norwich last Saturday.

City: Bailey; Pollard, Charlton; Pullan, Garratt, Potter; Newman, Kirk, Blackmore, Lievesley, Compton.

Referee: Mr J.C.O'Neill, of Barking.

Southend:- Moore; Bell, Sayles; Jewhurst, O'Rawe, Andrews; Johnson, Bissett, Hick, Donovan, Smith.

Twelve minutes from the end Southend scored. They had won a corner on the right, and from Johnson's centre Donovan headed against the crossbar. As the ball rebounded into play Charlton booted it aside, and Johnson, gaining possession, passed to Bissett, who headed a very smart goal. It was a very bleak afternoon for Exeter City, whose plight is now becoming precarious. From start to finish Southend were the superior team, and in fact only good luck kept the Exeter goal intact for so long, and there were several narrow escapes before Bissett's "all important" header shook the net.
O'Rawe was never properly extended by Blackmore, who was a very weak leader of the home attack. Garratt, at centre half, showed a lack of confidence in his own powers, and was too prone to hesitation.

SOUTHERN LEAGUE:
BARRY V CITY RESERVES.

A mis-kick by Flynn let Hopkins through to score for the Welshmen, this being the only goal before the half-time interval. A second goal by Hopkins was followed by one from Shelton for the Reserves, but when Lowton punched out a shot from Hopkins, the same player scored from the resultant penalty to complete the hat-trick,and give Barry a well deserved victory by three goals to one.
