Brighton and Hove Albion v Exeter City

Saturday, March 27th 1926.

Referee: Mr E.E.Small, of Bristol.

Brighton: Webb; Curran, Jenkins; Wilkinson, Mooney, Edmonds; Nightingale, Neil, Jennings, Hopkins, Wilson.

Exeter City:- Bailey; Lowton, Charlton; Pullan, Pollard, Potter; Newman, Kirk, Lievesley, Myers, Compton. City:

Exeter City went off with a rush in their Third Division encounter with Brighton on the South coast enclosure today, and by quarter time were three goals up. The Grecians' recent performances have been anything but impressive. Pollard was tried at centre half with Lowton at right back. There were six thousand spectators when Jennings kicked off facing the sun and a slight wind. An early corner to Brighton was placed accurately by Nightingale but Bailey punched the ball out. Jenkins missed his kick when Exeter attacked, and Kirk beat Webb to give Exeter the lead after only three minutes' play.

Compton put the Grecians further ahead after ten minutes, for after beating Wilkinson he sent in a low drive which completely deceived Webb, the ball entering the net just beneath the crossbar. The City were not content to let matters rest at this, and only a couple of minutes later Myers secured possession and sent to Compton, whose centre was promptly kicked into the net by Lievesley. Brighton then pulled themselves together, and Edmonds struck the Exeter crossbar after Bailey had punched out a corner kick from Nightingale. Jennings put in two strong shots, but found Bailey quite capable of dealing with everything which came his way. Nearing the interval a considerable amount of pressure was exerted by Brighton, and when Neil sent the ball across Wilson scored with a grounder which went into the net through a crowd of players, Bailey being unsighted. After the interval the game ran on fairly level lines, but credit is due to the Exeter half backs, who never allowed the Brighton front rank to settle down to play their customary game.

WESTERN LEAGUE MATCH AT SWINDON
Played on Wednesday, March 24th 1926.

Exeter City Reserves accomplished one of their best performances when they visited Swindon for a Western League match and won very handsomely by four goals to one. The Grecians outplayed the opposition at the start, and their form in the first half was a revelation. Only two minutes had elapsed when Casson gave Exeter the lead, and after twenty minutes Swindon were four goals in arrears. Swindon managed to reduce the lead just before the close, but they were always fighting a losing battle. Exeter's other goals in the first half were obtained by Compton (2) and Casson.

  • DEVON SENIOR CUP FINAL.
