Torquay United 1-1 ECFC
Scorer: Vaughan
Attendance: 11,625
Champions of the Southern League Western Section, Torquay United gained election to the Football League for their first fixture in the Third Division South. There first match was the local derby against Exeter City. There was a carnival atmosphere at Plainmoor, where the crowd were entertained before the match by a Charlie Chaplin impersonator. The Grecians added a nice touch by handing out a souvenir wishing the newcomers luck. Fourteen new players had been signed to bolster United's League campaign and their player-manager, Percy Mackrill, was one of only two members of the Southern League squad to line up for this inaugural match. The other was reserve goalkeeper Laurie Milson, called up at the last minute to replace former England amateur International, Archie Bayes, who had suffered in training.
Torquay United:-
Milson. Cook. Smith. Wellock. Wragge. Connor. Mackey. Turner. Jones. McGovern. Thompson.
Exeter City:-
Wainwright. Lowton. Charlton. Ditchburn. Pool. Warren. Purcell. McDevitt. Lievesley. Vaughan. Kirk (Bob).
The good natured supporters of both teams mingled on the terraces and were treated to a highly entertaining game played in an excellent spirit.
Midway through the first half, City full-back Wilf Lowton handled a cross from winger Dan Thompson. Inside forward Bert Turner made no mistake from the spot-kick and earned the distinction of scoring United's first League goal. Within a minute of the restart, Wilf Lowton had the opportunity to make amends for his earlier indiscretion but thudded a penalty against the crossbar after full-back George Smith had been penalised for handball.
Torquay clung onto their lead until the interval, but Exeter dominated the second half. Laurie Milson emerged as the Man of the Match with a string of brilliant saves to deny the City attack. Just when it seemed the home side would collect both points, City's persistence finally paid off four minutes from the end. The move which led to the equaliser was started by Wilf Lowton, who atoned for his earlier errors by playing a long ball up the wing to George Purcell. The winger's cross was cleverly held up by centre forward, Wilf Lievesley, then released into the path of Billy Vaughan whose low drive bounced awkwardly to beat the keeper's outstretched hand. With seconds remaining, United had a glorious chance to regain the lead when right-half Maurice Wellock found Bert Turner with a through-ball, but his shot was smartly saved at the foot of the post by keeper Tom Wainwright.
Full Time:- Torquay United 1-1 Exeter City.
CITY RESERVES v BRISTOL ROVERS RESERVES.
In view of the large number of supporters who left Exeter at mid-day to see the City's opening game at Torquay, the attendance at St James's Park suffered considerably. Nevertheless the game between the City and Rovers reserve teams promised to be an interesting encounter, with six newcomers in the Exeter team and seven recruits in the ranks of the Rovers. Ideal weather favoured the game, and there were 3,500 spectators when the teams appeared.
City Reserves:- Holland; Pollard and Miller; Phoenix, Mason, and Gee; Jenkins, Andrews, Chambers, Dent, and Compton.
Rovers Reserves: cDensley; Rotherham and McKenna; Mason, Perry, and Roberts; Homer, Thom, Ormston, Russell, and Davies.
Pollard won the toss and Bristol kicking off carried play to the home territory, but Davies centred behind the net.
Chambers failed to convert a centre from Dent through being too slow, but brought the best out of Densley a minute later with a fine header. The City defence was very sound, and quickly broke up any attempt by Bristol to get out of their own half. The home forwards were thus given plenty of opportunities, and from one of them a centre from Compton was passed on by Dent to Andrews, who gave Densley no chance with a hard shot to the bottom corner of the net.
In subsequent raids the crossbar was skimmed by Phoenix and struck by Andrews, and a header from Chambers which beat the Bristol goalkeeper was kicked clear by Rotherham, who had dropped back to the goal-line. Exeter's second goal, five minutes before the interval, was the result of a single handed effort by Compton, who, receiving a pass from Chambers, defeated three opponents before firing the ball through Densley's legs, from close in. Play deteriorated in the second half, and was further marred when blows were exchanged between Phoenix and Davies. Chambers scored for the City five minutes from time.
Result: City Rovers 3 Bristol Rovers Reserves 0.
