Two Goals in the Last Sixteen Minutes FIRST AWAY WIN FOR THE SEASON Brighton v  Exeter City

Saturday, September 24th 1927.

BRIGHTON & HOVE 0 EXETER CITY 2.

Exeter City were faced with one of their hardest tasks of the season today when they met Brighton and Hove Albion at the Goldstone Road ground. Few clubs have the privilege of gaining even a point when they visit Brighton, although the City did win there by three goals to one a couple of seasons ago. Further changes to the many already made this season were decided upon by the Exeter team selectors, the most sensational being the dropping of both Lowton and Charlton from full-back and substituting Pollard and Miller. The half back line was also reconstructed, Phoenix being taken out of the attack to play at right half and Gee coming in on the other flank to allow Miller to drop back. Dent was moved from inside-right to centre-forward, and the front line was completed by the reinstatement of McDevitt, who captained the side, and filled the inside-right position, partnering Purcell. Brighton, having so far beaten Brentford and Millwall and lost to Newport, were unchanged.

Brighton: Williams; Smith, Curran; Wilkinson, Mooney, Little; Simpson, Jennings, Cook, Hopkins, and Wilson.

Exeter City:- Holland; Pollard, Miller; Phoenix, Pool, Gee; Purcell, McDevitt, Dent, Vaughan, and Compton.

Referee:- Mr A.J.Attwood, of Newport.

The weather was beautifully fine, but the bright sunshine and strong wind were likely to cause some discomfiture to the players. The attendance at the start was close on ten thousand. Williams beat McDevitt in the toss, and the Albion had the benefit of sun and wind in the opening half. McDevitt from the kick off attempted to burst through but was smartly pulled up by Curran, and the home forwards were not long in showing their paces. A round of swinging passes ended with Mooney shooting wide. Wilson went close with a cross-shot, but the scene of activities soon changed, and a good run by Purcell endangered the Brighton goal. Vaughan in the next Exeter attack passed back to Gee, who centred, but Curran beat Dent to the ball and cleared his lines. Holland then ran out and pluckily saved from Cook when it looked odds-on the former International scoring. Williams next kept out a shot from McDevitt from a range of ten yards. End to play ensued, and the Exeter crossbar was struck by

Wilson from Cook's pass. Holland was frequently in action, and he gathered a header from Simpson and a shot from Hopkins. Vaughan lost a good chance when he held on too long and was crowded out; a quick pass would have been of more use with Dent anticipating such a move. Exeter were, however, playing a fine open game, and forcing the pace towards the interval, but when the referee blew for half-time neither side had scored.

The City's Goal in Danger.

Rain started to fall during the interval, but the shower was brief and cleared two or three minutes after the resumption of the game. The Grecians were the first away, Gee sending a nice pass through to Compton, but the winger had difficulty in controlling the leather, which finally rolled over the goal-line. Brighton soon retaliated, and when Jennings put Cook away with a forward pass it seemed the Exeter goal must fall. Cook, however, after steadying himself, shot high over the crossbar. Brighton persisted in a close passing game which up to now had not been effective, although the City goal was several times in danger, mainly from Hopkins and Wilson on the left wing. Compton unaccountably put the ball over the Brighton bar from only two or three yards in front of Williams, when it looked easier to score. The City forwards did not give up trying, however, and 29 minutes after the interval they rewarded. Purcell, fed by Phoenix, dribbled past Curran, and centred. Compton were from the scrimmage which followed shot high into the net. Six minutes later the City scored again following strong play on the right. As the ball was centred Dent, running to the left, turned quickly and shot a splendid goal.

EXETER CITY RESERVES 4
YEOVIL AND PETTERS

Charlton captained the City Reserves this afternoon at St James's Park in the Southern League against Yeovil, and he was given a special ovation as he went to the centre circle to meet Gregory for the toss. Gregory won it, and Exeter kicked off towards St James's Road facing a strong sun.

City Reserves: Wainwright; Lowton, Charlton; Chambers, Mason, Warren; Jenkins, Andrews, Lievesley, Selley, and Kirk.

Yeovil: Packer; Clark, Howe; Pullan, Gallon, Gregory; Newman, Wilson, Williams, Lloyd, and Grist.

In two minutes the City Reserves took the lead, clever dribbling by Jenkins, with Chambers in support, ending in Selley getting a simple chance close in, and he promptly netted. In a later Exeter attack a centre from Jenkins struck Howe's hand and a penalty was awarded. Andrews took the kick but shot a little too high, the ball striking the top corner of the framework. From the rebound Selley fired over the bar. Jenkins in twenty minutes scored Exeter's second goal, and Lievesley afterwards got a third, but this was disallowed on account of Howe being injured. The next legitimate goal was however scored by Lievesley. Eight minutes before half time Jenkins delayed his centre and collided with Howe, and was carried off with a broken collar-bone and taken by motor-ambulance to the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital. Lievesley added Exeter's fourth goal after the interval. They was an outburst of cheering when it was announced that the "chiefs" had won at Brighton.

TAUNTON UNITED v EXETER CITY RESERVES

Exeter City Reserves, in quest of Western League points on Thursday evening met Taunton United at Taunton, and were defeated by 4 goals to one. At the interval Taunton led by two goals (Randall and Wheeler) to one, by Lievesley. Shortly after the interval Lowton handled in the penalty area, but Wainwright tipped the ball over the bar from Morgan's kick. Randall added a third goal for Taunton, and just before the close Wainwright was beaten for the fourth time, Wheeler finding the net from ten yards. Taunton were the better all-round side and well deserved to win.

The Exeter City team was Wainwright; Lowton and Charlton; Chambers, Mason, and Warren; Parkin, Andrews, Lievesley, Selley, and Kirk.
