Match 09
8th October 1927
Brentford (a)

Southern League
Mid Rhondda (h)

BRENTFORD 1
EXETER CITY 1.

Saturday, October 8th 1927.

Brentford were unable to play Phillips at centre-forward, Watkins taking his place with Drinnan at inside-left. The morning's fog cleared away early in the Metropolis, and by three o'clock the sun was shining brilliantly at Griffin Park, when the sides took the field before 9,000 spectators. A slight breeze blew from end to end, and this was taken advantage of by Exeter, who won the toss. The City took the field in blue shirts owing to the similarity of the colours.

Brentford: Ferguson; Butler, Winship; Hodge, Fletcher, Dearn; Lawson, Lane, Watkins, Drinnan, Douglas.

Exeter City:- Holland; Pollard, Miller; Phoenix, Pool, Gee; Purcell, Mc Devitt, Dent, Vaughan, Compton.

Referee:- Mr E.E.Small, of Bristol.

Brentford, although losing a point at home, were much the better side, and periodically penned Exeter in their own half, but their attacks, in which Lane and Douglas were most prominent, lacked finish, and luck was certainly not on their side. In spite of several hair-breadth escapes Holland kept the score a blank until six minutes before half-time, when Lawson cleverly headed through from a long centre by Douglas after Drinnan had beaten the City defence. Exeter equalised after twenty minutes' play in the second half, a weak shot by Dent hitting Butler and entering the net to the consternation of the Brentford players and supporters.

SOUTHERN LEAGUE
EXETER CITY RESERVES 2
MID RHONDDA 1.

Glorious weather prevailed at St James's Park this afternoon, where the City Reserves entertained Mid Rhondda in the return Southern League match. There was an attendance of 2,500 spectators.

City Reserves:- Wainwright; Lowton, Charlton; Chambers, Mason, Warren;
Jenkins, McDade, Lievesley, Selley, and Parkin.

Mid Rhondda: D.Jones; C. Thomas, W.Thomas; Holt, Rowlands, John; Scholes, Atkins, W.Jones, Davies, and Griffiths.

Referee:- Mr F.W.Reeve, of Devonport.

Chambers and McDade were prominent in some bright constructive work for the City Reserves, and Scholes was conspicuous for the Welshmen with some pretty dribbling. Selley scored for Exeter ten minutes before half-time. In the second half Lievesley obtained Exeter's second goal after he had shot outside from close range a minute earlier, and near the close Scholes headed a fine goal for Mid Rhondda. Rowlands took no part in the game in the second half, having injured his ribs in the first minute of the game and carried on pluckily for the remainder of the first half.
