Norwich City
v Exeter City
CITY 2 CITY 2.

Saturday, January 7th 1928.

Exeter City provided the attraction at the Nest, Norwich, this afternoon, the form of the Grecians having placed them in a leading position in the table. There were 7,000 spectators at the start.

Norwich City: Dennington; Hannah, Ferrari; Lamb, Richmond, McGrae; Cousins, Robinson, Varco, Moule, and Slicer.

Exeter City: Holland; Pollard, Miller; Ditchburn, Mason, Gee; Purcell, McDevitt, Dent, Vaughan, and Compton.

Both teams settled down quickly and some spirited exchanges were fought out in midfield without either set of forwards making much progress. In the eighth minute of play Dent scored for Exeter from close range after Compton had put over a nice centre. It was practically the first move that Exeter had made, and it was a perfect example of team work. The Grecians failed to hold the lead for long, however, for straight from the restart Varco equalised with a brilliant shot from outside the penalty area. Both goals had narrow escapes, then in 28 minutes Dent gave Dennington no chance with a fierce shot to the top of the net.

Half-time: Norwich 1 Exeter City 2. Hannah saved on the goal-line from Vaughan, and with the Grecians' right wing working in perfect unison Norwich were hard pressed. Purcell was particularly dashing, and his shots at goal were worthy of a better reward. Holland at the other end saved from Moule and Varco, and for Exeter Dent shot through but was given offside. Lamb equalised for Norwich following a free kick, eight minutes from the end.

SOUTHERN LEAGUE
EXETER CITY RESERVES 2
TORQUAY UNITED RESERVES 3

The reserve teams of Exeter City and Torquay United met for the third time in the present season today, when at St James's Park they engaged in an encounter for Southern League points.

City Reserves:- Wainwright; Lowton, Charlton; Chambers, Pool, Warren; Jenkins, McDade, Andrews, Parkin, and Kirk.

Torquay Reserves:- Millsom; Rice, Mackrill; Townsend, Davis, Daniel; Knapman, Griffiths, Budd, Pattison, and Pearcey.

There were two and a half thousand spectators, and they warmly applauded the opening exchanges, which were dashing and clever. Pool and his colleagues in the half-back line gave the forwards plenty of support, but the Torquay backs were reliable and showed sound anticipation. Torquay took the lead in seven minutes through Griffiths, and the goal was a very good one. In a quick raid Pearcey, unmarked, crossed the ball over Charlton's head to Knapman, and when the winger centred Pattison promptly let drive at the Exeter goal and struck the post. The ball rebounded to Knapman, who lost no time in centering again, and this time Griffiths headed neatly past Wainwright and into the goal.

Exeter's Admirable Combination.

Exeter set up a hot attack after this and Millsom won applause for two saves from Jenkins. The second time the ball rebounded to Parkin, who centred for McDade to shoot first time, and although still on the ground Millsom saved this shot also. In the twenty-second minute Exeter equalised, Jenkins heading the ball through coolly after a dashing movement in which Andrews and Parkin figured. Fifteen minutes later the City took the lead, Lowton passing to Andrews, who swiftly turned the ball across to McDade. A lively shot from McDade was too much for Millsom. In the second half Budd scored for Torquay and McDade for Exeter, and twelve minutes before the finish Torquay got on level terms again. Knapman cleverly dribbled past Charlton and Pool in turn and crossed the ball squarely to the centre for Budd to steer it into the Exeter goal close to the upright. The game was evenly contested to the end.

WESTERN LEAGUE
TORQUAY UNITED RESERVES 1
EXETER CITY RESERVES 2.

Western League match at Plainmoor, Torquay. Both teams were strongly represented, and the first half ran in favour of the City, whose forwards however missed several chances. Jenkins early on put the ball over the bar, but his clever dribbling afterwards gave Andrews a golden opportunity to score, which was wasted. At the other end Ringland was robbed by Lowton when almost through, and next Wainwright saved from Griffiths. McDade eventually scored for Exeter. Shortly after the start of the second half Jenkins cleverly scored for Exeter but later missed several easy chances. Torquay were awarded a penalty for a foul and Wainwright made a brilliant save from Price's kick. Ringland scored for Torquay, but the City were worthy winners of a fast game.
