Match 31
11th February 1928
AFC Bournemouth (a)
Southern League
Aberdare Athletic (h)
BOURNEMOUTH ATHLETIC 2
EXETER CITY 0.
Saturday, February 11th 1928.
Exeter City visited Bournemouth today to play their Football League match with the "Cherries." They found Dean Court a vastly altered ground, €1,500 having been spent on big developement since the Grecians' last visit. The improvements included an extensive new grandstand with accommodation for four thousand spectators. A gale swept along and across the playing field today, and although the sun shone brilliantly through an almost cloudless sky it was clear that players would have great difficulty in serving up a good exhibition of football. The Grecians, with Dent again at centre forward, had to play in blue shirts owing to the similarity of their colours with those of Bournemouth. Blair, the Scottish International, won the toss and gave Boscome the advantage of the sun and wind in the opening half.
Boscombe: Crumley; Hayward and Blair; Halliwell, Miles, and Bradford; Clifford, Stringfellow, Eyre, Taylor, and Threlfall.
City:- Holland; Pollard and Miller; Ditchburn, Mason, and Gee; Purcell, McDevitt, Dent, Vaughan, and Compton.
Referee: Mr W.H. Burnell, of Bristol.
Bournemouth took the lead inside two minutes, Hayward's clearance kick being sent on by Eyre to Clifford, who promptly centred at speed for Taylor to head the ball into the Exeter net. After twelve minutes Pollard was penalised for a foul on Eyre just outside the Exeter penalty area. Hayward came up and took the kick and Mason headed away, but Taylor gained possession and scored with a low well placed drive. Bournemouth won today because they made the most of their advantage in winning the toss. Their swift opening attacks were delivered very smartly in the first half, and before the City had settled down the damage had been done.

ABERDARE ATHLETIC 3.
The visitors to St James's Park for today's Southern League match, who were
routed by the Grecians in the first of this season's F.A.Cup matches, are an ex-Third Division club, but their performances this year in the lower grade of football have been only moderate.
City Reserves:- Wainwright; Lowton, Charlton; Phoenix, Chambers, Clarke;
A.J.Gumm, McDade, Andrews, Parkin, and Kirk.
Aberdare: Crum; Lewis, Gibbon; Davies, Lanyon, Williams; Sheldon, Brown, Edwards, Edmunds, and Burback.
The visitors scored first through Edwards, but Parkin and Gumm obtained first half goals which put Exeter in the lead. Edmunds equalised early in the second half and Andrews headed a lovely goal for Exeter. Sheldon again equalised, scoring from a penalty for hands against Phoenix. With two further goals Andrews completed a unique "hat trick," all headers. The game was largely spoiled by a gale of wind.
