Match 34
25th February 1928
Luton Town v Exeter City
Western League
Exeter City Reserves v Taunton Town

LUTON TOWN 2
EXETER CITY 1.
February 25th 1928.
The League match at Luton was a fine game, and the pace was fast throughout. Exeter's forwards did nothing exceptional before the interval, but for fully twenty minutes after the change of ends they outplayed Luton. Aggressive movements backed up by strong kicking, super-covering by the home backs, and some brilliant goalkeeping by Abbott kept out the City, who could do everything but find the net.

Edwards led the forwards splendidly but was completely out of luck when it
came to shooting. Parkin, making his first appearance of the season, showed some clever touches in close footwork. Luton played like a team at the bottom of the League, which they are. They were desperate in everything they did from the first kick to the last, and all the luck was with them. Exeter City, for whom Mason was in grand form at centre half, were unlucky to lose. Rennie opened the scoring account for Luton after ten minutes, and in the second half Nunn got their second goal and Compton replied for Exeter.

Luton: Abbott; Richards and Till; Black, Ramage, and Fraser; Pointon, Yardley, Rennie, Woods, and Nunn.

Exeter: Holland; Pollard and Miller; Ditchburn, Mason, and Gee; Purcell, McDevitt, Edwards, Parkin, and Compton.

Referee: Mr J.V. Pennington, of Reading.

EXETER CITY RESERVES 2
TAUNTON TOWN 1.

Glorious weather prevailed for today's Western League match at St James's Park between the City Reserves and Taunton Town, and the ground was in a splendid condition. The visitors journeyed down by motor 'bus, and were without Sid Pavey, former Exeter City goalkeeper, who is standing down with knee trouble. In the place of Pavey was Arthur Wellard, of Bexley, who has qualified as a fast bowler in the Somerset County cricket team. Charlton won the toss and Exeter played towards the big bank end in the first half. The teams were:

City Reserves:- Wainwright; Lowton, Charlton; Phoenix, Pool, Warren; Jenkins, McDade, Andrews, Lievesley, and Kirk.

Taunton Town: - Wellard; E.Curtis, Lee; McLean, W.Curtis, Clemett; A.J.Smith, A.Ford, G.F.Clark, Pte Wetherick (Somerset Regiment), and Ingram.

Referee:- Mr R.A.Bowden, of Newton Abbot.

Pool was in very energetic mood at centre half and showed great skill on the hard ground. Lievesley shot powerfully following a corner, the ball ending up on the wrong side of the goal. Exeter took the lead in 27 minutes through a mistake by Wellard, who came out too far, and McDade slid the ball across to Lievesley, who dribbled it into the empty net. Andrews for Exeter and Ford for Taunton scored in the second half. Phoenix and Curtis (W) came to blows and were admonished by Mr Bowden.
