WATFORD 3 EXETER CITY 2.

The Grecians visited Watford today for an important League game, and a gate of about 8,000 witnessed an exciting match in excellent weather. The ground was, however, somewhat heavy after two days of rain. Morris appeared on the right wing for Watford in place of Hills, who is injured.

Watford: Hewitt; Prior and Davison; J.Yates, Fuller, and Jewett; Morris, Warner, Groome, Sheppard, and Daniels.

Exeter City: Holland; Pollard and Miller; Ditchburn, Mason, and Gee; Purcell, McDevitt, Edwards, Dent, and Compton.

Referee:- Mr W.Evans, of Barry.

The five goals all came in the first half. Dent gave Exeter the lead in the tenth minute, Groome equalising five minutes later. Morris then obtained two more goals for Watford, and when Compton was brought down in the penalty area by Prior a penalty was ordered, from which Gee scored. Except for a disastrous five minutes during which Watford scored all their goals the City were much the superior team, but that fatal slackening off led to two valuable points goi west. Holland played well in goal, and the backs were fairly sound. The half backs were better as a constructive trio than as a defensive line, and the Watford wing men were allowed too much scope. Compton and Dent made a dangerous left wing, Compton's speed and thrust being a source of anxiety to Watford. Edwards had no luck in his shooting, but did well in other respects.

Today's attraction at St James's Park was a Western League match between the City Reserves and Weymouth, and in fine weather 2,000 spectators assembled. The ground was soft after recent heavy rain. The Reserves had Goldsworthy, of Exmouth, at centre forward in place of Andrews.

Reserves: Wainwright; Lowton and Charlton; Phoenix, Pool, and Clarke;
Jenkins, McDade, Goldsworthy, Lievesley, and Parkin.

Weymouth: Harper; Allen and Brown; Huddy, Underhill, and Bown; A.H.Winaust, Swindles, Thompson, Haywood, and Pitman.

Referee:- Mr J.J.Hughes.

Charlton's success with the toss gave Exeter the advantage of playing with the sun at their backs in the opening half. Jenkins, who won frequent applause by his nimble and daring play, scored after five minutes, and the lead was added to by Goldsworthy after 23 minutes. Goldsworthy with two more goals in the first ten minutes of the second half completed a fine "hat trick," following which Jenkins got Exeter's fifth and Goldsworthy the sixth goal, shooting unhesitatingly out of Harper's reach.

  • BLACKBURN ROVERS IN THE SEMI FINAL.
Exeter City's F. A. Cup conquerors made further progress in the competition on Saturday, when they beat Manchester United by two goals to nil in the tie for the sixth round, at Ewood Park. The game was attended by an enormous crowd of nearly fifty thousand people. By their latest victory the Rovers have reached the semi-final round, along with Arsenal, Huddersfield Town, and Sheffield United. Blackburn will play Arsenal in the semi-final, on March 24th, at Leicester. Exeter City are still the only club to have forced Blackburn Rovers to play a second match in this year's Cup competition.

WEYMOUTH OUTPLAYED

Exeter City Reserves Bring Off the Double

On Saturday last at St James's Park the City Reserves, playing at the top of their form, defeated Weymouth by 6-nil. This afternoon the Grecians journeyed to Weymouth and in a Southern League game defeated the Dorset XI by 4-2. It is interesting to note that Exeter City Reserves, who are second to Bristol City Reserves in the League table, have only lost one match out of the last eighteen, this being against the Argyle Reserves at Home Park.

Game Well Worth Watching.

This afternoon the game at Weymouth was interesting and well worth watching, any amount of good football being crowded into the 90 minutes' play. Weymouth were the first to score, Pitman going through to beat Wainwright in as fine an individual effort as has been seen on the ground this season. Andrews shortly afterwards got the equaliser as the result of a clever move by Jenkins, and before the interval McDade gave Exeter the lead, the scores at the cross-over being:
Weymouth 1 Exeter City Reserves 2.

Second Half.

Immediately on the restart the Exeter forwards got going in fine style, and the home defence underwent a period of considerable stress. Andrews got the third goal for Exeter and Strong scored for Weymouth, but in the closing fifteen minutes McDade put the issue beyond doubt with the fourth Exeter goal. The City half back line played good football throughout and gave the forwards many chances, of which they took full advantage.
