Yeovil & Petters (a)
EXETER CITY 2
CHARLTON ATHLETIC 1
Saturday, March 10th 1928.
Since New Year's Day the Grecians have not been seen in winning vein in a Football League match at St James's Park, but they were expected to make a special effort to remove this blot from their escutcheon this afternoon. The City forced a draw at Charlton in October, no goal being scored, and it is a fact that with one exception meetings between these clubs have produced very few goals. Today Exeter City reverted to what is generally looked upon as their best forward line combination, with Dent leading and Vaughan at inside left, and with the ground in firm condition and a wintry nip in the easterly breeze a fast and clever game was anticipated. Teams :
Exeter City: Holland; Pollard and Miller; Ditchburn, Mason, and Gee; Purcell, McDevitt, Dent, Vaughan, and Compton.
Charlton Athletic:- Lindon; Smith and Herod; Codd, G.H.Armitage, and Hird; Sherlaw, Rankin, Lennox, Bethell, and Horton.
Referee: Mr A.S.King, of Swindon.
Charlton looked very smart in white shirts and black knickers. Hird won the toss and Dent set the ball in motion towards the "Duke" bank, the visitors having the advantage of the breeze. Exeter took the lead sensationally in less than two minutes, a speedy attack
yielding a corner from which Purcell sent the ball into the goalmouth. The Charlton defence was hampered by McDevitt, who prevented a clean clearance, and Gee kicked the ball inwards again to Vaughan, who netted with a rousing shot to the top of the net in approved opportunist style. Ten minutes later Charlton equalised, a low ball from Horton slipping out of Holland's hands, so that Lennox, following up, was able to tap the leather easily into the net. The game became scrappy, and the 5,000 spectators found little to interest them, but McDevitt did his best to pull things together, and Pollard played his usual strong game in the City defence. The City regained the lead after half an hour's play, Gee putting the ball smartly up the wing for Compton to lob it into the goalmouth. Lindon fisted away, but Purcell, fully fifteen yards out, headed the ball beautifully back into the Charlton net. Herod, who had dropped back to the goal-line, was powerless to stop the shot. The second half was singularly devoid of incident, and nothing further was scored. Exeter's best players were Purcell, Pollard, and McDevitt.
Western League
YEOVIL & PETTERS 2 CITY 3.
Rowlands, the new centre half from Mid Rhondda, made his debut for Yeovil in this Western League match at Huish. In the Exeter forward line Edwards and Lievesley displaced Andrews and Parkin. The City attacked and scored in the first minute, a hard drive by Lievesley going into the net off the goalpost. Radford equalised after 25 minutes. Jenkins in the second half gave the lead to Exeter, Scott equalised, and Jenkins got Exeter's winning goal.
