Match 25
15th January 1927.
Merthyr Town (a)
Southern League
Barry Town (h)
MERTHYR TOWN 3 EXETER CITY 3.
Played at Merthyr Tydfil;
Saturday January 15th 1927.
The weather was wet and misty at Merthyr this afternoon when the return fixture between the City and the Martyrs was played. Merthyr were weakened by the loss of Clarke and Jenkins through injuries, Evans and Mitchell deputising. The City made wholesale changes from the team knocked out of the Cup by Accrington. The attendance was only about 2,000 at the start.
Merthyr Town.
Lindon; Page, Pedler; Crewe, Woodward, Evans; Mitchell, Murphy, Phillips, Sutherland, and Davies.
Exeter City.
Bailey; Pollard, Charlton; Pullan, Ditchburn, Potter; Purcell, McDevitt,
Blackmore, Lievesley, and Compton. Charlton lost the toss, but Exeter were dangerous straight away, Lindon having to save from Compton. Lievesley headed just wide from Compton's centre, and the City kept up the pressure, but in the third minute a misunderstanding between Pollard and Charlton presented Murphy with a gilt edged chance, and he made no mistake from point-blank range. After twenty minutes Bailey dived too late to stop a shot from Phillips, and the Town were two up. Ten minutes later Phillips scored again, lobbing the ball into an empty net when Bailey ran out in a vain attempt to save from Mitchell. Three goals scored in the second half enabled the City to gain a point, a feat which appeared impossible at half-time. Exeter made a vigorous rally when the teams crossed over, and the strength of their attacks was such that Lievesley in less than five minutes was enabled to dash through to score. Blackmore put the finishing touch to another grand movement shortly afterwards, and Exeter's form in this half was a revelation. After twenty minutes Purcell got through to the bye-line and centred perfectly for McDevitt to steer the ball into the net. Bailey was the hero of the match, for it was due to him alone that Merthyr Town only scored three goals before the interval. On their second half display Exeter City were very unfortunate in not winning.
