LUTON TOWN 2
EXETER CITY 2
Played at Luton,
Saturday, January 29th 1927.
Exeter City:- Bailey; Lowton, Charlton; Pool, Good, Potter; Purcell, Phoenix, Blackmore, Lievesley, and Compton.
Luton Town
Harper; Graham, Till; Gordon, Richards, Fraser; Pointon, Yardley, Panther, Agnew, and Clark.
The ground looked to be very heavy, but the weather was perfect at Luton, where six thousand people attended the match between the Strawplaiters and Exeter. In the first minute Lowton broke up a Luton attack and passed out to the wing for Purcell to make rapid headway, but when the centre came across Compton was off side. Exeter resumed the attack, and Blackmore passed to Lievesley, whose shot hit the post. The ball rebounded into play, and Phoenix put it in the net to register the opening goal, after five minutes. Lowton deputising for Pollard, who is injured, was conspicuous, together with Bailey in the City rear guard, but Luton were beginning to settle down well, and after half an hour's play Pointon scored for them, the ball going into the net off Bailey's left hand. Shortly before the interval Pool was penalised, having played the ball with his hands, and Graham scored from the "spot." Seven minutes after the interval Potter scored a great goal for the City, thus bringing the equaliser. It was anybody's game from start to finish, and if the Exeter forwards had only a little more penetrative power they could have won the match in the first half. Good was the best of three medium half backs, whilst the best man in the team was Wilfred Lowton, deputising for Pollard. Lowton was never in difficulties, and showed great judgment in all his work. Bailey was a safe goalkeeper.

EXETER CITY v COMBINED COLLEGES

EXETER CITY 10
COMBINED COLLEGES 1.
An interesting fixture, the first of its kind locally, was played at the St James's Park the headquarters of Exeter City this afternoon, when an Exeter City XI entertained a team representing the Combined Colleges.
The City took the opportunity of trying out half a dozen amateurs, and Collegians wore the Exeter University College colours of green and white.
Exeter City XI.
Stanbury; Pullan, and Chapple; Clarke, Snapes, and Garratt; Newman, Thompson, Burrows, Petherick, and Parkin.
Combined Colleges.
Skinner; Coombes, and Rogers; Noakes, Down, and Smith; Brewer, Bidgood, Lewis, Rowlands, and Jennings.
Referee:- Mr Lovell.
Lewis shot past the posts in a raid by the Colleges, but Exeter City soon tested the visitors' defence severely, and Skinner made a capital save from Thompson, but was beaten in the next minute by Burrows, who scored the opening goal with a beautifully placed shot. For some time after this the Colleges were defending, but every now and then their forwards made progress to the Exeter City end, and their best effort was a high shot from Down which went just wide. Petherick, who was a very nimble forward, scored twice within a minute, and had two more shots charged down by the backs and another one saved by Skinner. Then Burrows and Petherick scor in quick succession to make the Exeter City total five. In the second half Bidgood scored for the Combined Colleges, and goals for the City were registered by Parkin, Petherick, Thompson (2), and Burrows.
