Match 28
5th February 1927
Norwich City (h)
Western League
Taunton (a)
EXETER CITY 1 NORWICH CITY 0.
Played at St James's Park, on Saturday February 5th 1927.
Randall for Bailey and Dent for Lievesley were eleventh hour alterations in the Exeter City team to receive their rivals from Norwich at St James's Park today. Bailey was kept out of the team through illness, and Lievesley had a troublesome toe injury.
Cousins, a smart young player from Gorleston, who has recently signed on for the Canaries on professional forms, was picked at outside right for his first match in the Football League. The ground was heavy and the weather showery when Charlton won the toss, and set Norwich to play from the big bank end. There were five thousand spectators.
Exeter City.
Randall; Lowton, Charlton; Pullan, Good, Potter; Purcell, Phoenix, Blackmore, Dent, and Compton.
Norwich City.
Dennington; Hannah, Campbell; Duffus, Richmond, McGrae; Cousins, Cropper, Jackson, Duthie, and J.G.Aitken.
Referee: Mr J.C.O'Neill, of Barking.
Exeter took the lead rather luckily after seven minutes. Compton, endeavouring to place the ball wide of Dennington, shot towards the far post. It appeared to be curling away from the goal when Campbell, rushing back, booted it into his own net. This was a match which the Grecians should have won with the greatest of ease, but owing to the poor finishing of the forwards when they had chances galore and sqaundered them the home defence had to fight very hard indeed to collect both points. Charlton played heroically at left back for Exeter, and a feature of the game was Randall's capable and clever goal-keeping. Exeter were weak at wing half, both Potter and Pool being inaccurate and slow i the feeding of their forwards, while the forwards themselves gave a very patchy exhibition. Randall midway through the second half saved a point by making a spectacular clearance from Jackson when the Norwich leader appeared to have the home goal at his mercy.
