CITY FORWARDS GOAL SHY: LUTON DRAW AT ST JAMES'S: 1 - 1

Saturday, September 1st 1928.

EXETER CITY (Cameron)
LUTON TOWN (Yardley)

Referee:- Mr W.Musther, of London.

Exeter City:- Campbell; Pollard and Miller; Clarke, Mason, and Christie;
Purcell, McDevitt, Cameron, Houghton, and Kirk.

Luton Town:- Abbott; Kingham and Richards; Black, Fulton, and Millar; Daly, Yardley, Rennie, Woods, and Dennis.

Exeter City's first home match of the 1928-29 season, with Luton, attracted seven thousand spectators to St James's Park this afternoon, although the glorious weather of the first day of September was altogether more suitable for holiday jaunts to the seaside and the moors. The "Park" appeared to be in splendid condition, there being a fine covering of emerald green turf, and no bare spots to be seen. There was a hearty round of applause when McDevitt led out the Grecians, and the enthusiasm was renewed when the Strawplaiters took the field. McDevitt won the toss, and at exactly 3.15 Rennie started the game towards the city end.

The Goals.

Exeter applied heavy pressure throughout most of the first half, but as was the case in previous matches the forwards were goal-shy, and a minute before the interval Pollard miskicked in the City goalmouth whereupon Rennie banged the leather into the net from point-blank range. The equaliser came midway through the second half, and was a very spectacular affair. Mason sent out a long pass to Kirk, who refused to be worried off the ball, working his way to the goal-line. From a position almost at the corner flag he swept in a quick low centre for Cameron to turn the ball past Abbott and into the net. One point from this match was not enough, from Exeter's point of view, but the fact remains that until the forwards can do better business in front of goal, they are likely to find it extremely hard to win matches.

PLYMOUTH ARGYLE RESERVES 1 EXETER CITY RESERVES 1.

The first meeting of the Argyle and City Reserves, at Home Park, resulted in a very poor game, there being frequent stoppages for fouls and infringements, and play was far below the average Southern League standard. Turl scored for Exeter in the first half, this goal being nullified after the interval from the penalty spot, Pullen beating Holland with a hard shot in the bottom of the net. The penalty was given for "hands" against Noble.
