Match 32
24th February 1927
Queen's Park Rangers (a)

QUEEN'S PARK RANGERS 1
EXETER CITY 1

Played at Shepherd's Bush, London, on Thursday, February 24th, 1927.

Fielding an un-changed side, Exeter City, this afternoon encountered the lowly placed Queen's Park Rangers, at Shepherd's Bush, London. Rain was falling when the Rangers kicked off before three thousand spectators, and the ground was in a deplorable condition, with scarcely a blade of grass to be seen.

Rangers:
Hebden; Sweetman and Pierce;
McAllister, Collier, and Eggleton; Charlesworth, Varco, Goddard, Swan, and Lofthouse.

City:
Randall; Lowton and Charlton; Pullan, Ditchburn, and Walker; Purcell, McDevitt, Blackmore, Lievesley, and Compton.

The City soon made headway on the left, but when Compton centred the ball stuck in the mud, and Blackmore ran past it. The game soon resolved itself into little more than a scramble, and no player seemed to be able to keep his feet, and to control an elusive ball.
Blackmore again failed to get his shot in following a long pass from Pullan and
a centre by Purcell. In the next minute, however, Blackmore made a most worthy attempt, working the ball cleverly down the middle and shooting against the bar from twenty-five yards' range. After a few more minutes the City were rewarded. Compton forced a corner, and from the flag-kick Lievesley headed in. Hebden got his hands to the ball, but before he could clear McDevitt barged in and scored from close range.
For fully ten minutes the City monopolised the attack, and fine shots by nearly every one of the visiting forwards were miraculously kept out. Pierce was injured and went to outside left, and Pullan, through receiving the full force of the heavy ball on his head, was dazed, and required the attention of the trainer. The game then veered round in favour of the Rangers, and Randall had to be alert to deal with a pile-driver from Lofthouse, now playing inside left. Eggleton had dropped back to cover Pierce's position, and Swan was at left half-back. Claims for a penalty against Lowton for "hands" were ignored by the referee, who was subjected to some mild boo-ing from the terraces. The Rangers forced the pace in the second half, and Varco, formerly of Torquay United and Aston Villa, drove wide from an excellent position. After thirty-three minutes Lofthouse equalised from Charlesworth's centre, the result of slack marking by Walker. In rapidly fading light McDevitt shot straight at Hebden when he should have scored, and the Rangers goalkeeper saved a hard shot from Blackmore.
