Friendly:- City Res. v Copplestone League X1
6th April 1927
Western League:- Exeter City v Bath City
2nd April 1927
Third Division:- ECFC v Gillingham

EXETER CITY 5 GILLINGHAM 1
Played at St James's Park on Saturday, April 2nd 1927.

Steady rain all the morning and continuing into the afternoon turned the groun at St James's Park into a quagmire, and the playing conditions were vile for the Football League match between the City and Gillingham. The covered accommodation on the popular side was much in demand, and there whe a good grand-stand attendance, but otherwise the banking was very bare, and the "gate" of 3,000 was the smallest for many a day. Gillingham won the toss.

Exeter City: Randall; Lowton, and Charlton; Ditchburn, Pool, and Miller;
Purcell, McDevitt, Lievesley, Dent, and Compton.

Gillingham:- Kelly; Bartley and Pickering; Rogers, Mason, and Nichol; Jones, Brown, Fairclough, Arblaster, and Bradley.

Referee: Mr F. W. Reeve, of Devonport.

The Grecians were pressing when after eighteen minutes Pickering fouled Lievesley five yards from the goal-line, and Mr Reeve had no option than to award Exeter a penalty. Lowton took the shot, and as usual, scored, the ball entering the net at a great pace well wide of Kelly. An opinion was expressed that Lowton, with the sort of shot he possesses, ought to be the forward line. Pool was injured, and had to retire, McDevitt dropping back to centre half. The City scored a second goal after 32 minutes, Lievesley headed through from Miller's centre. Three minutes later Lievesley scored again, from a lobbed ball from the foot of Ditchburn, and almost instantly the "new" centre forward got another goal to complete his "hat-trick." Gillingham, who were the poorest side seen at Exeter this season, were employed almost solely in defensive duties in the second half, and Lievesley scored the City's fifth goal. Miller had a shot saved by Kelly, and near the close Jones dashed in and got a goal for the "Hoppers."

Exeter City Reserves 1-1 Bath City

Western League match,
at St James's Park, Exeter.
Wednesday, April 6th 1927,
kick-off 4 p.m.

The Western League match between the City Reserves and Bath City turned out to be only moderately interesting, both teams being poorly served in attack.

City Reserves: Bailey; Pollard and Potter; R.Clarke, Good, and Walker; T.C.Turl, Thompson, Phoenix, H.Butler, and Parkin.

Bath City: B.Davis; Screech and Sambridge; Song, C.Davis, and Smith; Brittain, Hill, Graydon, Lloyd, and Ivey.

The visitors were strong in defence, and their forwards had several scoring chances which they failed to turn to account, mainly because Graydon was too slow. Phoenix opened the scoring in ten minutes, and Hill equalised a minute later.

The game was notable for the particularly bright play of R.Clarke, the Exeter amateur half-back, who showed quickness, confidence, and skill, and he often upset the calculations of the Bath forwards in surprising fashion, considering his limited experience. Good was very effective, as was Walker. Pollard in defence was outstanding. The play of the Exeter forwards was on the whole ragged, but T.C.Turl, who turned out at outside right, impressed as a strongly built fast and capable player, able to bring the ball under control with the minimum of delay, and the possessor of a ready and powerful shot.
