Match 40
15th April 1927
Millwall (a)

Southern League:-
Bristol City Res. (h)

Good Friday,
April 15th 1927.

Exeter City were beaten by Millwall at "The Den" by four goals to two, but the somewhat heavy defeat does not give a fair idea of the general run of the play. For the major portion of the game Exeter were the better side, and their football was forceful, skilful, and at all times progressive, and yet they were unable to convert their superiority into goals. Parker opened the scoring for Millwall after twenty-one minutes, and though the City continued to be the better side in midfield, Millwall within the next minute scored twice, through Phillips and Chance. Lievesley scored for Exeter. Page scored Millwall's fourth goal nine minutes after the start of the second half, and almost at the finish Lievesley converted a centre from Purcell.

Millwall:- Lansdale; Tilling, Hill; Amos, Bryant, Graham; Chance, Page, Parker, Phillips, and Black.

Exeter City:- Randall; Lowton, Charlton; Ditchburn, Pool, Miller; Purcell, McDevitt, Lievesley, Dent, and Compton.

Southern League
Exeter City Res. v Bristol City Res.

At St James's Park, in the Southern League, Bristol City Reserves beat Exeter City Reserves by two goals to one. Play was very bright throughout, with Exeter the cleverer side in midfield in the opening half, but the Grecians missed many chances, Thompson especially being a culprit in this respect. He opened the scoring, nevertheless, after splendid combined play with Walker and Phoenix. Walker was fouled in the penalty area, and the "spot" kick was entrusted to Pullan, but he failed to beat Jones, and close on half-time Gray obtained the equalising goal. In the second half the Bristol team showed perfect combination, all their movements being carried out at high speed. The Exeter team had a full share of the play, which continued to be of a very entertaining character. In a spirited Bristol attack Drummond gave the Babes the lead, heading an excellent goal. G.Stanbury, of Plymouth St Thomas's, played a brilliant game in the Exeter.
  • Blackmore Making Good at Bolton.
A well-known North of England football critic was much impressed with the general form of Harold Blackmore on his debut for Bolton Wanderers. His description of the Silverton man's goal, against The Wednesday, gives a good idea of what occurred. Here it is: "The Wanderers had not to wait goal, however, and it came from the foot of the new centre forward, Blackmore, who threw up his arms in sheer delight when he brilliantly converted a centre for a from Wright in six minutes. Blackmore took his chance admirably, the ball being propelled from his foot at a great pace and striking the underside of the cross bar before passing into the net." and he The same critic goes on to pay a tribute to Blackmore's leadership, also mentions that "Blackmore was the only forward who was doing any shooting on the home side."
