Match 19
15th December 1928
Crystal Palace (a)

Western League
Bath City (h)

CRYSTAL PALACE 1 EXETER CITY 0.
Played at Selhurst Park, London, on December 15th.

The conditions for today's game in London were most unfavourable, snow having to be swept off the pitch to make the lines visible. The atmosphere was also very gloomy, and the start of the game was threatened by a thick fog, which hung about all the morning but cleared slightly after lunch.
There is no doubt that most of the Exeter players were looking forward to the renewal of their acquaintance with Stanley Charlton, that great stalwart of the Grecians' defence for so long, and a former captain. Charlton, who was given the captaincy of Crystal Palace in today's match against his former team mates, was one of the most popular players ever to have worn the red and white stripes of Exeter City, and by all accounts he is held in the same esteem at the Palace club.

Crystal Palace: Callender; Crilly and Charlton; Hamilton, Wilde, and Greener; Harry, Havelock, Griffiths, Butler, and Fletcher.

Exeter City: Holland; Lowton and Miller; Pollard, Pool, and Clarke; Purcell, McDevitt, Doncaster, Houghton, and Death.

Five thousand spectators were present when the captains tossed for choice of ends, McDe vitt beating Charlton in this. The Palace were the first to attack and Griffiths put the ball over the bar. It was evident that football on the frozen surface was going to be very difficult, and Miller was soon in trouble when he put the ball back towards his own goal in attempting to clear, and Holland just managed to avert the danger. Exeter then broke away, and clever short passing between Houghton and Death carried them through to the Palace end, the move being finally halted by Crilly, who tackled Houghton and kicked upfield. Exeter were soon on the attack again, and Doncaster missed a possible chance by shooting straight at Callender, who cleared. Griffiths beat Pollard for pace, but again finished weakly, shooting over the bar from about twelve yards with a clear sight of the goal. Charlton was playing his usual steady game in the Palace defence, and Exeter were kept at bay. After 30 minutes of play Griffiths atoned for earlier mistakes by giving the Palace the advantage of the first goal of the match. Wilde gained possession in midfield and made a quick transfer to Butler, who put Griffiths through. The centre-forward, formerly of Torquay United, advanced a couple of yards and beat Holland with a low cross-shot, the ball entering the net off the inside of the goalpost. Owing to the fading light the teams crossed over at half-time without taking the usual interval. The Palace attacked continuously in the second half but were unable to add to their score, mainly owing to the strong defensive play of Lowton and Miller.

CITY RESERVES 4 BATH CITY 4.

Two thousand spectators attended St James's Park today on the occasion of the visit of Bath City, who were playing the City Reserves in the Westem League. Dennington, the new player from Reading, was at centre-half, with Ditchburn at right back. Teams :

Exeter:- Campbell; Ditchburn, Davies; Sheffield, Dennington, Christie; Bluck, Phoenix, Streets, Wade, and Cameron.

Bath: Garrett; Howson, Sambridge; Neesam, Waite, Torrance; Bird, Walker, Brittain, Alsop, and V.Smith.

The game opened at a fast pace and some attractive play was seen. Bird was being given rather too much latitude, and he finished a sparkling run with a neat cross to Jock Walker, the ex Pilgrim and Grecian, who "sold the dummy" to the home defence by allowing the ball to run between his legs to Alsop, who scored a simple goal, after ten minutes. At the end of half an hour Brittain obtained Bath City's second goal, but at last the Grecians asserted themselves and Streets headed a nice ball into the visitors' net. Wade levelled the scores five minutes before half-time. Early in the second half Streets gave Exeter the lead, but Smith eventually equalised. Then a series of errors by Davies, Ditchburn and Campbell allowed Smith an opportunity right in front of goal, and the Bath left winger made no mistake. But the excitement was not yet over, for Cameron in the last few minutes of play dribbled right through and quietly steered the ball past Garrett and into the net to ensure the Grecians of one point. The best players in the Exeter team were Ditchburn, Cameron, Dennington, and Wade, while Brittain and Smith were lively raiders in the Bath ranks.
