LAST MATCH OF THE SEASON
CHARLTON ATHLETIC v EXETER CITY.
Saturday, May 7th 1927.
Exeter City completed the season with a visit to Charlton Athletic at the Valley, where they were beaten by one goal to nil. They can only have them selves to blame for dropping both points, for only at rare intervals did they put any life into their play. Had they shown any idea of cohesive football at any stage of the game, they must at least have equalised the rather lucky goal scored after 25 minutes by Sherlaw for Charlton Athletic. Although some of the City's midfield play was fairly good, they failed when approached by the fast moving home defenders. The one "star" of the side was Bailey, who played a great game. Lowton and Charlton appeared slower than usual. The half-backs were disjoined following an injury to Pool, who had to go off the field ten minutes before half-time, and the line was lacking in understanding, although Ditchburn made one or two good scoring attempts. Phoenix, replacing Lievesley at centre forward, quite failed to keep the vanguard together, and, like all the other forwards, was often at fault with attempts at heading and shooting.
Charlton Athletic:- Preedy; Smith and Herod; Paterson, Armitage, and Davies; Godfrey, Biswell, Sherlaw, Rankin, and Collins.
Exeter City:- Bailey; Lowton and Charlton; Ditchburn, Pool, and Miller; Purcell, Mc Devitt, Phoenix, Dent, and Compton.
Referee:- Mr C.F.Moon, of Bristol.
EXETER CITY RESERVES v
BATH CITY.
By common consent, it was too hot for football today, and possibly that was the explanation for a crowd of only eight hundred being present at St. James's Park for the last match of the season.
City Reserves:- Randall; Pollard and Potter; Pullan, Good, and R.Clarke; Newman, L.Turl, Thompson, J.T.Petherick, and Parkin.
Bath City:Woodward; Nash and Sambridge; Jones, Long, and Smith; Brittain, Hill, Graydon, Lingard, and Ivey.
Bath City's goalkeeper, E.Davies, was injured in the match against Plymouth Argyle Reserves on Thursday, and Woodward, the regular outside right, was given the position. Pollard won the toss and the Grecians had the blazing sun behind them for the first half. Bath had the better of the opening play, Randall being called upon frequently to deal with centres from Brittain and Ivey. Bath City combined very neatly in attack, and the Grecians had two lucky escapes at the end of fourteen minutes' play, first Lingard and then Hill shooting outside the open goal at ten yards' range. Fifteen minutes before the interval Exeter gained the lead against the run of the play, a centre from Parkin being headed through the goal by Thompson. Exeter did most of the attacking when the second half began, and a big shot by Clarke fully extended Woodward. Then Thompson snapped up a quick pass from Newman and eluding Nash went on to score with a coolly taken shot. After eighteen minutes Exeter went further ahead in remarkable circumstances. Pe therick was going through when he was fouled, but recovered, kept possession of the ball, and scored. The referee's whistle had sounded before the ball had entered the net, however, and Exeter were awarded a free kick just outside the penalty area Poetic justice was done when Pullan scored from the free kick. In subsequent play Turl, who had not done much, came right out of his shell, and struck the Bath cross-bar with a tremendous drive. Five minutes before the end of a rather slow game a mistake by Pollard enabled Ivey to middle the ball to Hill, who scored at his ease. Exeter were awarded a penalty for hand-ball, but Pollard shot wide from the spot, and the game ended with the result: -
Exeter City Reserves 3 Bath City 1.
