Saturday, October 19th 1929.
EXETER CITY 1 (Houghton)
MERTHYR TOWN 1 (Wilkins)
Half-time City 1 Merthyr 0.
Exeter City: Alderson; Howson and Shanks; Clarke, Ditchburn, and McMullan; Purcell, Houghton, Guyan, Hemingway, and Doncaster.
Merthyr Town: J.Woodward; Cross and Creighton; T.Woodward, Hargreaves, and Smith; Wilkins, Cruickshank, Parker, Dransfield, and Slack.
Referee:- Mr G.T.Gould, of London.
The weather was mild and dull, with banks of clouds obscuring the sun, and the winning of the toss by Ditchburn carried no advantage. The attendance at the start numbered about 6,000. Merthyr Town, who played in blue shirts and white knickers, are bottom of the League, having won only once so far, but their opening was fast, bright, and enthusiastic, and the standard of their game belied their League position. In fact Exeter had to defend strenuously in the opening few minutes to keep the Martyrs out.
MILLER IS MISSED IN THE CITY DEFENCE.
Exeter City again lacked the services of Miller, and the sooner he is back in the team the better. Neither Howson nor Shanks were at all convincing, and a lot of extra work fell on Alderson, who stood up to it bravely. Against the run of the play the Grecians opened the score in four minutes, the goal being the outcome of neat combination between Purcell and Guyan and netted by Houghton with a flashing cross-shot. Wilkins, who is one of the best visiting players to be seen at St James's Park this season, scored Merthyr Town's equaliser in the second half. He took the ball from the half-way line, beat Ditchburn, then ran between the backs, and shot hard and true. Alderson made a praiseworthy attempt to stop the grounder, but the pace of the ball beat him. The City had chances in the closing stages, but finished weakly. Ditchburn, as he was last week, was the best player on the field.
