Grecians' Best of the Season: Hemingway's Brilliant Match

Saturday, November 2nd 1929.

EXETER CITY 5 (Hemingway 3 Doncaster Guyan)
SWINDON TOWN 1(Morris)
Half-time 3-0.

Exeter City:- Alderson; Baugh and Shanks; Clarke, Ditchburn, and Dennington; Purcell, Houghton, Guyan, Hemingway, and Doncaster.
Swindon Town:- Nash; Penn and Girvan; Low, Johnson, and Archer; Denyer, Eddleston, Morris, Dent, and McCartney.
Referee:- Mr E.E.Small, of Bristol.

With two alterations, Baugh for Miller and Dennington for McMullan, the City accomplished their best performance of the season, and the score of 5-1 in no way exaggerated their superiority. While the Exeter team as a whole was on the top of their form, Swindon, who had Fred Dent late of Exeter and Norwich City at inside left, never struck a semblance of theirs, and in fact must on today's showing rank as the poorest side seen at Exeter this season. Exeter scored four minutes from the start, Hemingway going through the defence. easily to beat Nash from eight yards with a perfectly placed ground shot. In twenty-three minutes Hemingway got another goal, this time with a cannonball drive that no goalkeeper on earth could have stopped, and seven minutes from the interval Doncaster netted Exeter's third goal after a brilliant combined move by all the City's forwards with Hemingway in the leading role.

SECOND HALF.

Guyan scored Exeter's fourth goal early in this half, and Hemingway the fifth, thus completing the "hat-trick." Swindon made a great rally in the latter part of the game and Dent passed to Morris, who scored. Just on time Baugh brought down Morris unfairly inside the penalty area, but Alderson saved Eddleston's spot kick. It was Alderson's second penalty save in two successive matches.

SWINDON TOWN RESERVES 1
EXETER CITY RESERVES 1.

Exeter City Reserves did well to force a draw in the Southern League match at the County Ground against a very strong Swindon side. McDevitt returned home with a badly damaged eye, caused by Bew's elbow, but he made light of it.

The City team was Holland; Howson, Noble; Sheffield, Mason, Gurkin; Armfield, McDevitt, J.Gumm, Henderson, and Corrigan.
