EXETER CITY 1  (Doncaster)

Half-time: Brighton O City 1.

Referee:- Mr F.W.Reeve, of Devonport.

A rather remarkable game at the Goldstone Ground, Brighton, ended in a draw, so that Exeter City enjoy the distinction of being the first club to escape defeat there this season. There were 7,000 spectators. The City obtained their goal seven minutes after the start when as the result of an unexpected breakaway Doncaster secured possession and beat Webb with a simple ground shot. Brighton practically dominated the game afterwards, but nothing went right for them, and it was not until the closing five minutes that Kirkwood brought the scores level. The outstanding feature of the game, especially in the second half, was the magnificent goalkeeping of Alderson. He, ably assisted by Baugh and Shanks, put up a solid and resolute defence. The half backs supported them splendidly, Clarke in particular playing a fine game. Houghton and Doncaster were the most effective of the forwards.

Southern League
EXETER CITY RESERVES 4
NEWPORT COUNTY 1.

St James's Park was again in splendid trim for football this afternoon, and the weather was fine and sunny. The attendance at the start numbered 2,500. The Grecians have secured five points from their last three Southern League engagements, and were hoping to improve on this today. Teams :

City Reserves: - Holland; Howson, Bright; Sheffield, Mason, Gurkin; Armfield, Corrigan, J.Gumm, Henderson, McMullan.

Newport Reserves: - Blakemore; Hugh, Wheeler; S.Richardson, Nairn, Jones; Chapman, Clifford, Whitton, G.Richardson, Bagley.

Referee:- Mr L.S.Mardon.

Armfield was prominent in many dangerous raids by the Grecians, but Newport defended well and Blakemore saved from Corrigan and Gumm. As the interval drew near Newport improved, and it was as well for Exeter that Howson was in good form. Almost on the half-time whistle Chapman scored for the Ironsides. The Exeter forwards, who had been too slow to accept their chances before the interval speed up their game in the second half, and scored four goals to earn a comfortable victory. Henderson, Corrigan 2, and McMullan were the marksmen.
