CITY BEATEN BY TWO LATE GOALS

Alderson Saves Another Penalty Kick

Saturday, November 23rd 1929.

BRENTFORD 2 (W. Lane J.Lane)
EXETER CITY 0
Half-time 0-0.

Brentford:- Fox; Stevenson and Adamson; Davies, Bain, and Salt; Foster, J.Lane, W. Lane, Blakemore, and Payne.
Exeter City:- Alderson; Baugh and Shanks; Clarke, Ditchburn, and Dennington; Armfield, Houghton, Guyan, Hemingway, and Doncaster.
Referee:- Mr W.E.Russell, of Swindon.

The Grecians have yet to register their first victory away from home this season, but against Brentford, who have yet to concede a point at Griffin Park, they went near to sharing the spoils. But had the City been successful in obtaining a point it would have been more than they were worth, for the "Bees" were the superior side. The second half had only twenty minutes remaining when Brentford scored, but many goal-bound efforts had only been frustrated by an excellent display of goalkeeping by Alderson. He refused to be flustered, and the way in which he took up position made goalkeeping appear a simple art.

AN ELEMENT OF LUCK.

While Brentford fully deserved their success there was nevertheless an element of good fortune about the goal which gave them the lead. A shot by Blakemore, driven with tremendous force, would have probably gone wide of the post, but W. Lane, attempting to avoid the ball by falling flat on his stomach, was not quick enough, and the leather struck him in the back, thereby changing its direction, and ricochetted into the net out of the reach of Alderson. Although the scorer was W. Lane it was really Blakemore's goal, and it gave a lead to Brentford to which they were justly entitled.

PENALTY SAVED BY ALDERSON.

They had a chance to go further ahead when Foster was fouled in the penalty area, but W. Lane's spot kick was saved by Alderson, his third such save in succession. Two minutes from the end J.Lane made the points safe for the Bees by converting a centre from Payne. Taking the match as a whole, the Exeter forwards were by no means out of the picture, and Armfield, making his debut at outside-right, was particularly aggressive, while Guyan also kept the home defenders at full stretch. Clarke, Ditchburn, and Dennington were so busy trying to halt the consistent Brentford attack that they found little time to assist their attack. Their policy was to clear their lines at any cost, and right well did they carry out their plan. Alderson was again in brilliant form, and the saving of the penalty kick was only one of many fine feats. He received a generous ovation from the crowd at the finish. For the second Saturday in succession the weather was unkind to footballers and the people who stand out in the open to watch them. Rain fell in torrents all the morning, leaving the pitch a veritable sea of mud. The attendance was just over 5,000, which is about half the number usually seen at Brentford's home matches. By their victory today Brentford now hold the proud record of being the only team in the Football League to have gained maximum points on their own ground.

LLANELLY 1
.

Baldwin, the centre-forward on trial from a colliery district, was unable to make his debut for Exeter City Reserves today in the Southern League match at St James's Park against Llanelly, because his registration papers failed to arrive in time. But the City had Thomas fit again after missing the last few games through injury, and he played inside-right with Henderson in the centre. Mason captained the side.

City Reserves: Holland; Howson and S.Bright; Sheffield, Mason, and Gurkin; J.Gumm, Thomas, Henderson, McMullan, and Corrigan.
Llanelly: Wilson; D.Evans and Pattimore; J.Evans, Preston, and Williams; Collins, McLachlan, Davies, McCarthy, and G.C.Evans.
Referee: Mr F.W.Reeve, of Devonport.

Corrigan gave Exeter the lead in twenty minutes with a very simple goal. The ball was sent well forward by Mason to Corrigan, who gave chase. Wilson came out, with the intention of gathering the ball at the edge of the penalty area but Corrigan got there first and flicked it direct into the empty net. The rain which had held off since this morning's downpour now set in again and players were soon slipping and sliding, whilst the supporters on the terraces scampered for cover beneath the "iron umbrella." Early in the second half Henderson netted from Corrigan's pass, then McLachlan scored for Llanelly. After Wilson had distinguished himself with excellent saves from Corrigan and Gumm, the last-named, receiving from Sheffield, ran half the length of the field to score a sensational goal for the Grecians, and Henderson completed the scoring with Exeter's fourth goal five minutes from the end.
