EXETER BEATEN BY A FASTER AND CLEVERER SIDE

Controversy Over a Penalty

Saturday, January 25th 1930.

EXETER CITY 0
QUEEN'S PARK RANGERS 2  (Moffat Goddard)
Half-time 0-1.

Exeter City:- Alderson; Gray, Shanks; Sheffield, Ditchburn, Dennington;
Purcell, Houghton, Guyan, Hemingway, and Doncaster.
Rangers:- Cunningham; Pollard and Pierce; McNab, Cockburn, and Neil; Moffat, J.C.Burns, Goddard, Rounce, and Young.

Referee:- Mr T.W.Chamberlain, of London.

Bob Pollard, making his first appearance at St James's Park since his move to the Metropolis, was given a rousing reception by the spectators when he came out in the blue and white "Rugby" stripes of Queen's Park Rangers, and the Exeter City Band, under the conductorship of Mr G.Newman, added to the welcome with a spirited rendering of that perennis favourite on such casions, "Auld Lang Syne (Should Auld Acquaintance Be Forgot and Never Brought to Mind.") But after McNab had beaten Ditchburn in the toss and the teams lined up with Exeter facing the St James's Road end, the pleasantries ended, for the first half was mainly controversial, with appeals and disputes for offside and for fouls, and most of all over a penalty kick, and the second half was so devoid of interest that the football was painful to watch. Moffat was palpably offside when he received the ball from Goddard to score for the Rangers after ten minutes. Eight minutes before the interval Exeter equalised but were "refereed" out of their goal. Sheffield centred the ball from a free kick, and one of the backs handled inside the penalty area. Exeter got their penalty, and Houghton beat Cunningham with a fast shot, but as the ball entered the net the referee blew his whistle. Contrary to the rule, Cunningham had moved his feet before the ball was kicked and the goal disallowed. And because of an infringement by the Rangers' goalkeeper Exeter were punished. The kick was ordered to be re-taken, and this time Houghton put the ball over the bar. The Rangers' second goal, by Goddard, was scored with almost the last kick of the game.
