CLAPTON ORIENT 0
Half-time 0-0.

Exeter City:Alderson; Gray and Shanks; Clarke, Mason, and Dennington; Purcell, Houghton, Varco, Hemingway, and Doncaster.

Clapton Orient:- Wood; Lyons and Gay; Lawrence, Eastman, and Galbraith; Hoar, Edmonds, Jack, Hughes, and Townley.

Referee:- Mr F.W.Reeve, of Devonport.

The injury to Armfield, which occurred 25 minutes from the end of the match at Craven Cottage, Fulham, on Saturday, is more serious than at first known to be. The X-ray examination of the player at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hos pital has revealed a bad dislocation of the collar-bone, and an operation is necessary. It is unlikely that Armfield will play again this season.

VARCO LEADS THE EXETER FORWARD LINE.

Exeter City's new centre-forward, Varco of Norwich City, made his debut for the Grecians on Wednesday afternoon, leading the forward line against Clapton Orient, who were also making a "first appearance" at St James's Park, having been relegated from the Second Division at the close of last season. Due to Armfield's unfortunate injury Purcell made a quick return to first team duty. Doncaster and Varco between them took play to the Orient goal, where Wood had to dive full-length to save from Doncaster, with Varco following up. After ten minutes Varco strained his thigh in falling and had to retire to the dressing room. Clapton Orient then had the best of the game and Alderson made a series of fine saves, one from Edmonds and another from Jack being warmly applauded by the crowd of 4,000. Varco returned to the fray, though limping, after an absence of 20 minutes and immediately upon his return Doncaster had to go off for massage treatment. At the interval nothing had been scored, and Exeter were defending desperately.

THE TRANSFORMATION.

The City, with their forward line reading Varco, Purcell, Hemingway, Houghton and Doncaster rattled in four goals, through Purcell (10 minutes), Doncaster (15), Hemingway (33 and 38).
It was a remarkable transformation.
