Bristol City Reserves (h)

CRYSTAL PALACE 1 (Simpson)
EXETER CITY 1 (Purcel1)

Saturday, February 15th 1930.

Half-time 1-1.

Crystal Palace: Imrie; Crilly and Charlton (captain); Swan, Wilde, and Rivers; Harry, Turner, Simpson, Jamieson, and Clarke (G).

City: Alderson; Gray and Shanks; Clarke (R), Mason (captain), and Dennington; Purcell, McDevitt, Guyan, Houghton, and Hemingway.

Referee:- Mr W.Evans, of Barry.

The City had a good journey, and were on the ground with plenty of time to spare. The team manager, McDevitt, reported all fit, and when the teams took the field the crowd, numbering 12,000, gave their old goalkeeper, Alderson, a special cheer. Mason won the toss, and the City had the advantage of a slight breeze. Exeter City were lucky to escape defeat at Selhurst Park, where both goals were scored in the first half and within five minutes of each other. In 31 minutes Simpson, following a corner, rushed the ball into the Exeter net and Purcell levelled the score five minutes later. Imrie allowed the ball to slip through his hands and between his legs in trying to stop the shot. Two players were appearing against former clubs, Charlton and Alderson, and both gave good accounts of themselves. Exeter played brighter football than the Palace in the first half. The quick first-time passing of the forwards and the excellent support afforded by Clarke and Dennington had the Glaziers on the run, and it was then that the advantage should have been pressed home. In the second half Exeter fell back on defence, and were fortunate to escape defeat. The Palace forwards played with great energy and determination but their methods were slap-dash.

EXETER CITY RESERVES 0
BRISTOL CITY RESERVES 2.

The Grecians today included Miller in his first home match after his lengthy absence through knee trouble. The Bristolians, whose reserves were at Exeter in search of Southern League points, are in difficulties financially, and to day came out with the announcement that all their players, who have been put on the transfer list, have agreed to accept half-pay in order to help.

Exeter:- Holland; Bright and Miller; Sheffield, Ditchburn, and Gurkin; Gumm, Thomas, Henderson, McMullan, and Hutchings.

Bristol:- Newlands; Walsh and Smith; Scott, Bennett, and Barber; G. Parker, Thompson, Vials, Beak, and Dickie.

The start was sensational, Thompson scoring in the first minute following a mix-up in the Exeter defence. In 25 minutes Holland unaccountably dropped the ball at the feet of Vials, who coolly dribbled it into the net.
