Exeter City v Watford

WATFORD 0
Half-time 1-0.

Watford: Hewett; Davison and Brelsford; Smith, McBain (captain), and Woodward; Chapman, Lowe, McPherson, Barnett, and Daniels.
Referee:- Mr E.C.Sambrook, of Swansea.
In dull but dry weather Exeter City and Watford lined up at 3.15 on Wednesday afternoon at St James's Park for the Football League fixture postponed from December 14th, when Watford were engaged in the F.A.Cup second round. The City, owing to an injury to McDevitt in the Crystal Palace match, and the recovery of Doncaster, reverted to the forward formation which has been usual with them during the greater part of the season. McBain won the toss and Exeter kicked off towards the far end, with about four thousand spectators in attendance.
A SOLO EFFORT.
After 24 minutes Doncaster, by sheer persistence in following up and making the most of what appeared to be a forlorn hope, forced his way through the Watford defence and tapped the ball into the net after dribbling round the goalkeeper. It was a brilliant solo effort, and warmly applauded by the spectators. Guyan from a good chance five yards out blazed the ball high over the bar. In the closing stages of the first half Chapman was fouled by Shanks in front of the grand-stand. Both players were hurt, and after they had been attended to by the respective trainers the referee warned Shanks and awarded Watford a free-kick. Alderson saved Smith's shot and later a centre from Chapman. Mason's work in holding McPherson was a feature of the first half play, and the City pivot was again prominent for cool defence when the game resumed. Ten minutes from the end Hemingway scored, but the point was disallowed for an infringement.
