Merthyr Town v Exeter City

Saturday, February 22nd 1930.
MERTHYR TOWN 0
EXETER CITY 2 (Guyan Hemingway)
Half-time 0-0.

Merthyr Town: - Lewis; Williams and Scott; Woodward, Hargreaves, and Fletcher; Cruickshank, Creighton, Parker, Dransfield, and Slack.
Exeter City:- Alderson; Gray and Shanks; Clarke, Mason, and Dennington; Purcell, McDevitt, Guyan, Houghton, and Hemingway.

Referee:- Mr G.T.Gould, of London.

By goals from Guyan and Hemingway the Grecians defeated Merthyr Town, at Penydarren Park. Hemingway's goal was a brilliant solo effort, the Exeter player going through on his own and beating man after man to finally leave Lewis helpless with a flying shot into the roof of the net. The man of the match, though, was Guyan, who was a bustling and busy leader, always ready to shoot. Alderson played a wonderful game in face of persistent Merthyr pressure in the second half, and Mason was the pick of a fine trio of half-backs.

A DISGRACEFUL SCENE.

In the second half the referee refused Merthyr a penalty, and was loudly booed by the crowd, which numbered 3,000. In another fierce raid by the home side, an Exeter man handled and Shanks was injured. The referee again refused the Martyrs a penalty and was hooted and subjected to various verbal insults for this. Houghton was injured and carried off the field. Disgraceful scenes were witnessed at this stage, and the referee was hit by a stone thrown by an angry spectator.
