BRENTFORD FORTUNATE TO SHARE THE POINTS

Argyle Now Favourites for Promotion

Saturday, March 29th 1930.

EXETER CITY O BRENTFORD 0.

This afternoon's game was an all-important one for Brentford in their effort to secure promotion, and the losing of a point while the Argyle were winning at Walsall indicates that the favourites for going up are now Plymouth. In fact, as far as the match at St James's Park is concerned, the Londoners were very fortunate to take away a point. The City did almost three quarters of the attacking and gave the opposition a most gruelling afternoon. There were seven thousand people on the ground when the teams appeared, and because of the fact that both clubs have identical colours, Brentford wore light blue shirts. Mason won the toss and Exeter defender the town end.

Exeter City:- Alderson; Gray, Shanks; Clarke, Mason, Dennington; Purcell, McDevitt, Varco, Houghton, and McMullan.

Brentford:- Fox; Dumbrell, Adamson; Davies, Bain, Ware; Foster, J. Lane, W. Lane, Blakemore, and Payne.
Referee:- Mr W.E.Russell, of Swindon.

Exeter had several chances to score, but their inside forwards did not give Fox any great trouble. Once Varco with a beautiful curling drive, shot just over, while McDevitt in the closing stages headed just wide with Fox beaten. The defences on both sides were better than the attacks. Alderson never made a mistake, though he had less work to do than Fox. Exeter's display was their best of the season, but they got all the bad luck, and late in the second half a strong appeal for a penalty was turned down by Mr Russell, who was subjected to much boo-ing from the crowd as a result.

NEWPORT COUNTY RESERVES 2
EXETER CITY RESERVES 0.

At Somerton Park, Newport, the City Reserves were beaten by two clear goals in this afternoon's Southern League match. The City supporters would like to see Bert Larsen, of South Molton, whom they have heard so much of, and who led the Exeter attack today. It would please them if Larsen could lead the City Reserve forwards next Saturday, when they will be at home to Launceston in a friendly match. Newport County's two goals were scored by Whitton before the interval.

The Exeter team was:- Holland; Baugh and Miller; Hill, Ditchburn, and Gurkin; Gumm, Thomas, B.Larsen (South Molton), Guyan, and Bright.

EXETER CITY RESERVES 2.

WESTERN LEAGUE MATCH AT STAPLETON ROAD, BRISTOL.

Exeter City Reserves, with Guyan at centre-forward, Purcell at outside-right, and Baugh making a welcome re-appearance at right-half after a long absence from the game caused through a broken leg, beat Bristol Rovers Reserves by two goals to nil at Stapleton Road on Wednesday evening. Fifteen minutes of the game had elapsed when in the home penalty area Ware was fouled by Skuse. Purcell scored from the spot-kick, and Skuse, who had got the worst of the tussle with Ware, had to retire with a damaged knee. Exeter were much the better side, and Ware, who was their outstanding member, cut in from the wing and shot a brilliant goal.
