FOOTBALL LEAGUE MATCH AT MILLFIELD ROAD, LONDON.

Saturday, April 5th 1930.

CLAPTON ORIENT 3 EXETER CITY 0.

In defeating Exeter City by three goals Clapton Orient gave one of their best displays this season. The Grecians were unfortunate in losing Alderson, after 20 minutes, the goalkeeper colliding with the goalpost and injuring his arm whilst trying to stop Tricker heading Clapton's first goal. This was not the sole cause of Exeter's defeat, for McMullan, who donned the goalkeeper's jersey, rose manfully to the occasion, and although beaten by Townley in the first half and Edmonds in the second, filled his unaccustomed position so skilfully that the spectators gave him a rousing ovation both at half-time and when the game was over.

Clapton: H.M. Garland-Wells; Broadbent, Lyons; Lawrence, Galbraith, Little; Hoar, Edmonds, Campbell, Tricker, and Townley.
City:- Alderson; Gray, Shanks; Clarke, Mason, Dennington; Purcell, McDevitt, Varco, Houghton, and McMullan.

The troubles of Exeter City stemmed from the fact that until he was required to go in goal McMullan was the most constructive of the forwards, and without him the line was very weak. Varco failed to distribute the ball effectively, and McDevitt and Purcell did not combine as they usually do. Houghton worked hard on the left. H.M.Garland-Wells, who played for Clapton Orient, is the Oxford University and English Amateur International goalkeeper.

EXETER CITY RESERVES 6 LAUNCESTON 1.

At St James's Park the City Reserves were this afternoon opposed to Launceston Town in a friendly engagement. The conditions of weather and turf were ideal for football, and the visitors, winning the toss, had the wind and sun behind them in the opening half. Irwin was a conspicuous worked in the Launceston attack, but the Grecians soon transferred play, and from Hill's long cross-field pass Thomas sent in a good low drive, Portass, the Cornwall County goalkeeper, saving on his knees, by the post. In further Exeter pressure Larsen crashed the ball against the bar at the angle of the upright, and Portass fisted away from Hemingway. Howson's strong defensive play prevented Launceston from getting into scoring positions.
Half-time:
City Reserves 0 Launceston 0.

Goals in the second half were scored by Gumm and Hemingway for the City, and Colwill for Launceston. Larsen and Hill scored further goals for Exeter. Larsen then handled in the penalty area, but from the spot-kick Williams hit the crossbar, and the ball was cleared by Howson. Hemingway and Larsen scored again for Exeter.

City Reserves:- Holland; Howson, Bright; Keefe, Gurkin, Hill; Gumm, Thomas, Larsen, Hemingway, and Ware.
Launceston: E.J.Portass; R.Maddever, J.Wheeler; R.Jordan, M.F.Williams, W.Armear; W. Chapman, P.Irwin, C.Dawe, R.Colwill, W.Mitchell. Referee:- Mr A.W.Lamacraft.

EXMOUTH UNITED 0
EXETER CITY 7.

The Exmouth United Club were exceedingly unfortunate with regard to weather conditions for their match with Exeter City's full League team on Wednesday at the Cricket Field. The officials were hoping to get a large crowd, which would have been the means of swelling the club's exchequer, and with this in view an evening kick-off was arranged. Rain had fallen throughout the day, and during the match there was a further continuous downpour.

Exmouth United: Gage; Hore, Pearcey; Wills, Bradford, Holmes; Luxon, Smith, Long, Lawes, and Perry.

Exeter City: Holland; Gray, Shanks; Sheffield, Mason, Clarke; Purcell, Houghton, Varco, Hemingway, and McMullan.

Although Exeter scored seven goals without reply Exmouth put up a very plucky and sportsmanlike display. Gage played a marvellous game in goal, and other Exmouth players to distinguish themselves were Bradford, Wills, and Long. Right from the kick-off the Grecians attacked and Purcell hit the post with a powerful low shot after receiving a through pass from Houghton. Gage saved brilliantly from Gray and Varco, and at the opposite end Holland cleared a shot from Perry. Varco, Hemingway, Clarke, and Mason then scored for Exeter, who led at half time by 4 goals to nil.

Hemingway scored Exeter's fifth goal in the second half after Gage had saved from Houghton, and McMullan centred for Varco to head the sixth. Hemingway then got clear of all opposition, and when Gage came out to meet him dribbled round the goalkeeper and placed the ball in the vacant goal. Wills, who is the captain of Exmouth Rugby team, had a shot saved by Holland right on "time."
