EXETER CITY 6 (Hemingway 4 Armfield Mason)
NORTHAMPTON TOWN 4 (Weston 3 Sissons)
Half-time City 3 Northampton 1.
Exeter City: Holland; Gray and Shanks; Dennington, Mason, and McMullan; Armfield, Purcell, Hemingway, Houghton, and Doncaster.
Northampton: Hammond; Anthony and Brett; Allon, Maloney, and Odell; Sissons, Dawes, Bowen, Hoten, and Weston.
Referee:- Mr E.E.Small, of Bristol.
The weather was dull but dry. On a soft ground Exeter kicked off before a crowd of 8,000. Dick Pym was among those present. He spent some minutes in the dressing room with the City players before the start of the game. He is compelled to take a rest due to a groin injury, and was on a visit to his native Devon. Exeter substituted Hemingway for Varco as leader of their attack, and the move was rich in results. Hemingway showed keenness and no little skill. After Weston had opened the scoring for the visitors Hemingway turned the scales against Northampton by performing the "hat-trick" before the interval. He scored again in the second half, and paved the way for yet another goal, Armfield netting after Hammond had saved a great shot by Hemingway. Exeter's last goal was obtained by Mason with a tremendous drive from thirty yards, the ball skidding on the turf near the penalty spot and flying into the roof of the net with Hammond helpless to save. Northampton's four goals were all scored from the wings, Weston getting three and Sissons the other. There was a match at St James's Park in the morning between Exeter Schools XI and Torquay Schools XI. It ended in a draw, each side scoring two goals.
YEOVIL and PETTERS UTD. 5
EXETER CITY RESERVES 1.
Yeovil and Petters United concluded their Easter programme of matches on the Huish Ground in fine style on Easter Monday afternoon when they defeated the City Reserves by five goals to one. They thereby completed the "double" over Exeter City Reserves, whom they beat at St James's Park on Good Friday by 4 goals to nil. Exeter fielded a strong team, hoping to atone for their previous failure, but they were unable to do any better than they did in the first match. A holiday crowd of well over four thousand watched the match, but from an entertainment point of view it was not nearly so entertaining as many encounters seen on the ground earlier in the season, Exeter failing to provide strong enough opposition to extend the "Glovers" to the full. At half-time Yeovil led by three clear goals, all being scored by players who were once on Exeter's books, McDade, who netted twice, and Parkin. Cheetham was hurt in a collision with Guyan, and received a cut on his face, with necessitated several stitches being inserted. He was unable to take any further part in the game. In the second half Western scored Yeovil's fourth goal and Bloxham the fifth, and five minutes before the finish Varco scored for Exeter. The teams were:
Yeovil: Johnson; Day and Cheetham; Logan, Pratt, and Parkin; Bloxham, McDade, Western, McNeil, and Barclay.
Exeter Reserves:- Godbeer; Howson and Bright; Baugh, Gurkin, and Hill; Gumm, Henderson, Varco, Guyan, and Death.
