Saturday, April 26th 1930.
EXETER CITY 0 NEWPORT COUNTY 4.

Glorious weather favoured Exeter City's last home Football League match this afternoon, Newport County being the visitors. Neither side had anything at stake, which perhaps was as well from Exeter's standpoint, because Holland was injured on Tuesday at Northampton and Alderson's damaged arm is not yet sufficiently recovered to allow him to renew his goalkeeping duties. McMullan, who played for the biggest part of the match against Clapton Orient in London a few weeks ago as an emergency goalkeeper when Alderson was hurt, was the surprise choice for that position today. He favoured a red jersey and did not bother with such accessories as cap or gloves.

Exeter City:- McMullan; Gray and Shanks; Clarke, Mason, and Dennington; Armfield, Purcell, Hemingway, Houghton, and Doncaster.
Newport County:- Blakemore; Anderson and Reid; Richardson, Nairn, and Riley; Seymour, Gittens, Martin, McKenna, and Thomas.
Referee:- Mr J.M.Wiltshire, of Sherborne.

Exeter City were soundly beaten by the Ironsides, for whom Martin emulated Hemingway's performance of last Monday, getting a "hat-trick" of goals before the interval. Close on time, from Thomas's centre, Seymour scored Newport's fourth goal with a powerful shot from dive yards' range. This was a most disappointing finale to Exeter's home League programme. The splendid opportunism and hard and accurate shooting of Martin was too much for the City's emergency goalkeeper, but the fact remains that the Grecians failed badly during much of the game when the play was running wholly in their favour. Hemingway, following his triumph of Easter Monday, tried hard to make similar progress, but he lacked support, and the Exeter forwards' performance was one of the poorest of the season.

LLANELLY 3
EXETER CITY RESERVES 0.

Exeter City Reserves today visited Llanelly for the final Southern League match of the season. Henderson and Death raided cleverly, and gave Guyan a chance, but Wilson, in the Llanelly, goal, made a splendid save. At the other end Godbeer saved from Vincent Davies and Roblings. Miller gave away a corner, from which Phillips shot across the City goal, and was finally scrambled over the line by Davies. Collins and Davies scored for Llanelly in the second half, in which Godbeer played brilliantly in goal for Exeter.

DEVON PROFESSIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP. EXETER CITY BEATEN BY PLYMOUTH ARGYLE.

Plymouth Argyle, who made certain of promotion to the Second Division when
they beat Newport County at Somerton Park on Easter Monday, retained their hold on the Devon Championship Shield on Wednesday evening by defeating the Grecians by two goals to one at Home Park.

EXETER CITY 1 (Houghton)
PLYMOUTH ARGYLE 2 (Sloan Vidler)

Argyle:- Cann; Bland, Titmuss; Fellowes, Pullen, McKenzie; Grozier, Sloan, Vidler, Leslie, and Black.
City:- Holland; Gray, Shanks; Clarke, Mason, Dennington; Armfield, Purcell, Varco, Houghton, and Doncaster.
Half-time 0-0.

The first half was goalless, Holland saving a penalty taken by Pullen. The Argyle took the lead, eventually, through Sloan, and Vidler added a second goal soon afterwards. Exeter replied through Houghton, who netted after a shot by Purcell had been punched out by Cann. Five thousand spectators enjoyed the game, this being Plymouth Argyle's first appearance at Home Park since winning promotion.

CITY RESERVES AT SOUTH MOLTON.
30th April 1930

The weather was glorious for South Molton's friendly game with Exeter City Reserves on Wednesday evening, and a big crowd of spectators watched with interest a game of purely exhibition football. The City were unable to send their first team on account of their engagement at Plymouth, but the eleven which did duty were a good side, and the artistry of their moves delighted the onlookers. South Molton as a team did splendidly against cleverer opponents, and credit is due to the North Devon men that they were able to get through the Exeter defence on two occasions and score goals. The final score was 5-2 and one of the City's goals came from a penalty, but it was of course obvious that the Grecians were not out simply to score. Nevertheless they found the Moltonians very keen, and Boucher was in very good form in goal, playing his best game of the season. Courtney, Frith, and Larsen were also particularly outstanding.
