Match 43
3rd May 1930
Third Division
Torquay United v Exeter City
Western League
Exeter City Reserves v Torquay United Reserves

Torquay United v Exeter City
Saturday, May 3rd 1930.

TORQUAY UNITED 2 (Pointon 2) EXETER CITY 1 (Houghton).

The three Devon professional Soccer clubs wound up their match programmes in convenient fashion today. Plymouth Argyle and Torquay United were both at home, and Exeter City were engaged on the ground of their "next-door neighbours," the South Devon club. Torquay were in need of at least one point this afternoon to ensure them to continue in the Southern Section without the necessity of making an appeal for votes at the annual meeting of the League. A special Great Western Railway excursion from Exeter at a convenient hour and a popular fare took a host of City supporters down to see the match. The weather was fine and warm, and the bone hard ground had a remarkably fine crop of dandelions. There were five thousand spectators. Purcell captained the City and won the toss. The teams lined up as follows:

Torquay:- A.W.C. Bayes; Womack, Goucher; High, Smith, Bruce; Mercer, Hill, Pointon, Keeling, and Waller.

Exeter City: Holland; Gray, Shanks; Clarke, Gurkin, Dennington; Armfield, Purcell, Hemingway, Houghton, and Doncaster.
Referee:-Mr C.E.Lines, of Birmingham.

Clever interpassing by the Torquay wingers led to the first goal, scored by
Pointon, who from Waller's centre nodded the ball into the roof of the net. This was after 20 minutes. Hemingway and Shanks were both injured but carried on. Hemingway and Doncaster changed places in the second half, but in taking a corner kick Hemingway damaged his leg still further, and had to retire, and for the rest of the match Exeter were left a man short in the forward line. With fifteen minutes left Houghton scored the equalising goal for the City, but almost immediately Pointon recaptured the lead for the Magpies, walking the ball into the net after Waller had beaten the defence.

There was a very small attendance to watch the closing match of the season at St James's Park between the reserves of Exeter and Torquay in connection with the Western League.

City:- Godbeer; Howson and Miller; Sheffield, Mason and Hill; Gumm, Thomas, Varco, Guyan, and Hutchings.
Torquay:-Millsom; Wright, Price; Freer, White, Dymond; Birkett, Rice, Kelly, Robinson, and Burn.

The play was so dull and leisurely that neither goal was threatened for some time, but after 25 minutes Mason forced his way through and calmly shot past Millsom. Varco was prominent with several good attempts, and he was unlucky not to score from at least one of them.
