AN EASY WIN FOR BRIGHTON

City Forwards Only Moderate: Varco and Purcell the Best

Saturday, September 6th 1930.

BRIGHTON AND HOVE ALBION 3 (Vallance Farrell Walker)
EXETER CITY 2 (Varco 2)
Half-time Brighton 2 Exeter 1.

Brighton and Hove:- Webb; Brett and Curran; Wilkinson, Mooney, Moffatt; Farrell, Kirkwood, Vallance, Walker, and Wilson.
Exeter City:- Davies; Gray and Shanks; Clarke, Inglis, and Dennington; Purcell, Houghton, Varco, Halliday, and Lister.
Referee:- Mr R.G.Rudd, of Harrow.

The weather at Brighton was dull, and the attendance did not number more than five thousand when the game started. Curran beat Inglis in the toss, and the City kicked off facing a slight breeze. Constructive Work of a High Quality. Brighton won this match more easily than the score of 3 - 2 suggests, and had Vallance been in anything like good form Davies would have been beaten on at least two more occasions. Davies should have prevented Brighton's opening goal, but he did well later, showing excellent anticipation at critical moments, while Gray and Shanks were sound defenders, although some of their kicking was very wild. Inglis stood out in the half-back line, his tackling being strong, and his constructive work of a high quality.

The City forward's did not play so well as a line as they did on Wednesday, and little was seen of Houghton and Halliday, and almost nothing of Lister. Varco, who scored both Exeter's goals, impressed as an opportunist first-class, and was ever on the alert for chances. He kept Webb and his protectors engaged in busy action throughout the match. Purcell played consistently well and was the City's most persistent attacker. He utilized his speed and ball control to the best possible advantage, and gave Curran much cause for anxiety. Vallance scored for Brighton within ten minutes of the start, receiving a nice through ball from Wilson and surprisingly beating Davies with a shot from the narrowest of angles. Nine times out of ten the Exeter goalkeeper would have covered this shot.

Varco's Equaliser.

Two minutes later, however, the Grecians were on terms. Purcell beat all the opposition in a beautiful touch-line run, and from his centre Varco netted,
and the pace of the ball and the accurate placing of the shot had Webb beaten in very similar manner to the way Purdy was beaten by Varco last Saturday at St James's Park. Brighton attacked again, and after twenty minutes Vallance met a pass, and put
the ball through to Farrell, who, cutting in, scored a second goal for the home side. The City were inclined to keep play too close, a policy which pay against Brighton's robust defenders. did not Brighton pressed strongly in the second half, and keeping up the pressure, went further ahead after twenty-five minutes, Walker scoring cleverly from Wilson's pass. Eleven minutes from time Varco scored for Exeter with a long shot, and in the last minute Vallance missed an open goal for Brighton.

Southern League
EXETER CITY RESERVES 1
LLANELLY 0.

Llanelly visited St James's Park this afternoon in a return Southern League en counter, having defeated the City Reserves in Wales by 5 goals to 1. In this match the City lost Ditchburn, injured, after twenty minutes, and had to play with ten men for the rest of the game.

City Reserves:- Jones; Baugh and Bright; E.Keefe, Angus, and Barber; J.Gumm, McCosh, Parsons, Allison, and Doncaster.
Llanelly:- A.Evans; G.Evans and C.Quinn; E.Williams, J.Nevin, and T.Woodward; E. Collins, D.Samuel, C.Robling, T.Taylor, and A. Phillips.
Referee:- Mr W.T.Brooking.

Exeter, who were captained by Baugh, did a lot of shooting from the edge of the penalty area in the early minutes, but Parsons was mostly wide of the target or too high, and when he tried getting to closer range he was generally too slow to outwit the Llanelly backs. After Baugh had cleverly broken up a Llanelly attack the best shot of the match so far was a bumping ball from Keefe from 20 yards, which Evans only cleared at the second attempt. Exeter would have done better if there had been quicker combination among the inside forwards instead of individualism of a rather laboured type. Doncaster and Gumm were the liveliest members of the City attack, but their centres were wasted by the men in the middle. Half-time: Exeter 0 Llanelly 0. Allison shortly after the resumption hit the crossbar of the Llanelly goal, and Samuel did the same for his side at the Exeter end. At length Parsons gained possession and dribbled coolly through the middle, to beat Evans with a splendid shot to which the goalkeeper dived too late. Angus was a very businesslike pivot for Exeter, while Baugh was in unbeatable form at right-back. Parsons headed over the Llanelly bar, and at the other end Robling headed the ball on to Taylor, whose shot went the wrong side of the post.
