TEAMS OBSERVE TWO MINUTES SILENCE

An Impressive Scene
Saturday, October 11th 1930.

EXETER CITY 1 (Doncaster)
SOUTHEND UNITED 1 (Barnett)
Half-time: 0-0.

Exeter City:- Jones; Baugh and Miller;
Clarke, Ditchburn, & Barber; Armfield, Purcell, Varco, Houghton, and Doncaster.
Southend United:- Moore; French and Robinson; Dixon, Wilson, and Donovan; Barnett, Jones, Shankley, Crompton, and Williams.
Referee:- Mr A.J.Attwood, of Newport.

Exeter City fielded their strongest team today, with the notable alteration that Fred Jones was given his first trial in goal with the Chiefs, and Davies was included in the Reserve team to visit Ebbw Vale. Southend had French at right back for Gibson, otherwise their team was the same as the one which had defeated Gillingham at the Kursaal last Saturday. The weather was fine, and there were 6,000 spectators when the captains tossed for choice of ends, Southend winning.

The R.101 Airship Disaster.
There followed an impressive scene, the teams and officials lining up in the centre of the playing pitch, and the Exeter City Military Band, conducted by Mr George Newman, playing the "Dead March from Saul, " while the spectators stood with bowed heads, as a tribute to the memory of the men who lost their lives in the R101 calamity. Then the players moved to their positions, Exeter facing St James's Road, and the match began.

There was some very smart individual play in midfield in the opening minutes, and in this Wilson and Jones, of Southend, took the palm. After Williams and Miller had jumped for the ball together and both missed Williams drove high over the Exeter goal.
Houghton got the Exeter forwards going in nice style at last, making off with the ball from a tight squeeze and feeding Armfield, who centred strongly. The ball came to Varco, who jumped high, his header missing by a fraction. Jones bravely dived at the feet of Shankley to clutch the ball, thus saving a certain goal, and this hot attack by the Shrimpers shook Exeter into greater activity. Varco went very close from Purcell's ground pass, but in another move the City centre forward blazed the ball wildly over the goal from easy range. At the end of half an hour a lovely pass from the Southend Jones to Shankley led to another exciting passage in front of the Exeter goal. Jones fisted out one shot, but the ball was sent back again, and this time Purcell, who had dropped back to help the defence, saved the situation for Exeter. Varco was leading his line in expert fashion, and his inch-perfect passes to the wingers were much appreciated by the crowd. Clarke dashed in and delivered a stinging shot across the Southend goal, missing it by very little.

Second Half.

Good play on Exeter's right wing led to a couple of corners, but the Southend defence worked itself free. Exeter returned eagerly to the attack, however, and in eight minutes from the interval secured the lead. The Southend defence was caught napping following a throw in by Barber, and the ball ran favourably to Doncaster, who closed in rapidly to score with a ground shot to the far corner of the net. Lively attacks by Exeter, in which Armfield's pace was a prominent feature, kept the excitement at top pitch. At the other end Crompton shot fiercely but several yards wide of the mark. Moore saved well from Varco, and just afterwards a shot from Armfield sailed over the top of the goal with Moore out of position. Five minutes before the finish Barnett obtained a soft equalising goal due to a blunder by the home defence, Miller and Baugh leaving the clearance to each other and Barnett stepping between them with the ball.

Comments.
It was one of the most exciting matches seen at the "Park" this season. Jones, keeping goal for the Grecians for the first time, made two saves before Exeter had scored, and one afterwards which made all the difference, and he is to be congratulated on a very successful debut. It was very unfortunate that Exeter's defensive display was marred by a moment of hesitation five minutes before the finish, which cost them a goal, also a point.
