EXCELLENT FOOTBALL ON A MUDDY PITCH
Bournemouth Backs Easily Beaten by City's Fast Wing-Men
Saturday, November 15th 1930.
EXETER CITY 4 (Armfield Houghton 2 Varco)
BOURNEMOUTH AND BOSCOMBE 1 (Eyre)
Half-time 4-1.
Exeter City:- Davies; Baugh and Miller; Clarke, Dennington, and Barber;
Armfield, Purcell, Varco, Houghton, and Lister.
Bournemouth:- McSevich; Hayward and Brown; Halliwell, Forbes, and Moralee; S.M.Beswick, Scott, Eyre, Whitehouse, and Webb.
Referee:- Mr F.W.Reeve, of Devonport.
Spectators at St James's Park this afternoon assembled in the rain, the weather having failed to stay the course. There was the promise of fast football on the slippery turf, with a gusty breeze taking a hand in the proceedings. Exeter City had Lister for Doncaster (injured) at outside-left. The visitors, who played in white shirts and black knickers, won the toss, and played from the St James's Road end in the opening half. There were 6,000 spectators. Within five minutes Exeter held the lead, Armfield running the ball into the net following a good centre from Lister and a header from Varco. In two minutes more, however, Bournemouth had equalised. A persistent attack by the visitors ended with Eyre heading the ball neatly past Davies. There followed some fast and exciting play, mostly at the Bournemouth end, and from Clarke's free kick in front of the grandstand Varco passed to Houghton who scored from close range. Exeter obtained a third goal after 27 minutes, Varco converting a splendid centre from Armfield. Two minutes later Houghton scored the City's fourth goal, heading into the net a centre by Armfield, but when Lister got the fifth it was disallowed for off side following a consultation between the referee and a linesman. All the goals were thus scored before the interval, and if Bournemouth had had twice as many chalked up against them they could not have complained. Hayward and Brown were weak defenders, and were beaten for speed almost every time by Armfield and Lister. Hayward's only accomplishment in the second half was the exploitation of the "offside trap," and Brown conceded several free kicks, and earned the disapproval of the crowd for fouls against Armfield.
