Match 25
27th December 1930
Norwich City (a)

Reserve Friendly
Friernhay (h)

Saturday, December 27th 1930.

NORWICH CITY (Pearson) 1
EXETER CITY 2 (Houghton 2)

Half-time 1-1.

Norwich City:- J.Smith; Hannah and Graham; Turner, Greenwell, and Jobling; Pearson, Weir, Hunt, Williams, and Slack.
Exeter City:- Davies; Gray and Shanks; Clarke, Angus, and Barber;
Armfield, Purcell, Varco, Houghton, and Doncaster.
Referee:- Mr A.S.King, of Swindon.

The ground at "The Nest" was very heavy, and further rainstorms made matters worse. The game had a sensational opening, for a miskick by Jobling let the Grecians through for Houghton to score. After nine minutes Pearson equalised, Hunt having provided the opening, and at half-time the sides were level with a goal apiece. The second half, like the first, opened with Exeter scoring straight away. Houghton received the ball from Doncaster and shot a brilliant goal. Exeter were just about value for their victory, although territorially Norwich had more of the game. The Norwich halves failed to hold Varco and his wingmen properly, while Hannah was very weak in defence. On the other hand Angus, playing in his first League match, was a model of consistency, whilst Clarke and Barber were also very steady. Houghton was in brilliant form in the forward line, and Doncaster the best outside player on the field. Davies played a wonderful game in goal for Exeter, whilst Gray and Shanks were reliable defenders.

EXETER CITY RESERVES 8
FRIERNHAY 3.

The Reserves wound up their Christmas programme with a friendly at St. James's Park against Friernhay, the successful local amateur club. The weather was an improvement on that of Boxing Day but there were only one thousand spectators.

City Reserves:- Bond; Hill and Bright; Keefe, Ditchburn, and Inglis; Allison, McCosh, Kenshole, Halliday, and Courtney.
Friernhay:- Godbeer; Snape and James; Perry, Reed, and Harrison; Smith, Setter, Taylor, Camble, and Erridge.

Referee:- Mr W.J.Lambshead.

Kenshole, the Silverton centre-forward, hit the post from Allison's pass three minutes after the start, and Godbeer saved from Courtney and Halliday. At the interval the City Reserves led by five goals, scored by Courtney 2, Kenshole, and Halliday 2, to nil, further goals being added in the second half by Inglis, Kenshole, and Halliday. Exeter then slackened off, and Camble, Setter, and Taylor scored for the Friars.
