Third Division
Notts County v Exeter City
Southern League
Exeter City Reserves v Swindon Town Reserves

Saturday, March 7th 1931.
 NOTTS COUNTY v EXETER CITY

Exeter's visit to Nottingham, where they were playing Notts County, aroused great interest in the Lace City. This was only to be expected, seeing that the two sides may be regarded as the outstanding teams in the Southern Section of the Third Division, Notts by reason of their leadership of the League and the City on account of their record breaking Cup achievements. Unfortunately there was a sharp fall of snow this morning, and the ground was in treacherous condition. Nevertheless there was a crowd of 12,000 present at the start, and the Grecians were given a great welcome.

Notts County:- Ferguson; Stimpson, Bisby; Dowsey, Smith, Kemp; Taylor, Fenner, Keetley, Andrews, and Haden. Exeter City:- Davies; Baugh and Miller; Ditchburn, Angus, and Barber; Armfield, Purcell, Varco, Houghton, and Doncaster.
Referee:- Mr E.E.Small, of Bristol.

Fenner was injured after ten minutes and had to retire. Varco scored for the City after fifteen minutes, dashing in to net the ball with terrific force when Kemp and Ferguson left it to one another to clear Armfield's centre. Five minutes before the interval Houghton converted a centre from Doncaster, beating Ferguson with a lovely cross shot from about 20 yards. Keetley scored for Notts four minutes after the change of ends.

Result: Notts County 1 Exeter City 2.

It seems that the Grecians just cannot help breaking records, for only three days after their gruelling F.A.Cup contest with Sunderland they have become the only visiting team to win on the Notts County ground. The City team, of whom Houghton and Varco were the pick, were given a generous ovation by the Nottingham supporters on leaving the field.
