Match 40
14th February 1931
Watford (h)
Reserve Friendly
Truro City (a)
Saturday, March 14th 1931.
EXETER CITY 2 WATFORD 1.
Beautiful spring weather favoured today's Football League match between the City and Watford at St James's Park. The attendance was 6,000. Watford won the toss and occupied the St James's Road end of the field in the opening half. James and Wooliscroft, Watford's leading forwards, were absent, both being laid up with the flu, but White, the reserve centre forward, caused a big sensation by scoring a goal in the first minute. Five minutes later Doncaster headed the ball to Houghton, who scored with a wonderful sideways header to the far corner of the Watford net. The Watford goalkeeper was Tom Holland, well remember for his service with the Grecians for the three past seasons. Midway through the first half Armfield gave Exeter the lead, beating Holland with a perfectly placed cross shot to the far corner of the net. The Watford goal had a series of escapes in the second half, but nothing further was scored.
Exeter City: Davies; Baugh, Miller; Ditchburn, Angus, Barber; Armfield, Purcell, Varco, Houghton, and Doncaster.
Watford: Holland; Brown, Davison; Smith, Woodward, Blake; Chapman, Barnett, White, Lowe, and Pick.
Referee:- Mr W.E.Russell, of Swindon.
Watford played very good football, apart from the vital matter of finishing off their moves. Exeter also played attractively and their two goals were very cleverly obtained. The play of Houghton and Purcell was such that they had the opposition guessing repeatedly, and generally they guessed wrong.
TRURO CITY 5
EXETER CITY RESERVES 3.
Exeter City Reserves had the surprising experience of being beaten by Truro. City at Truro by five goals to three. The Grecians were considerably below full strength, and Truro's desire to avenge themselves for their 10-1 defeat at Exeter on September 20th led the Cornish side to play at their very best. Truro were three goals to the good shortly before half-time when Exeter were awarded a penalty kick from which Parsons scored. Two more goals were registered for Truro in the second half, then Halliday and Parsons scored for Exeter.
