Exeter City v Charlton Athletic

Saturday, February 2nd 1929.
EXETER CITY 2 (Streets Smith own goal)
CHARLTON ATHLETIC 5 (Lennox 5)

If Exeter City's League position has not reflected the true strength of the side up to the present, the team fielded today certainly shaped like one that was due for relegation.
The wing half-back play was at times farcical, especially in the important matter of defence, and Dennington, who tried very hard to keep things going at centre half, was helpless. In the forward line the City's play was patchy. Bastin was too well marked to be effective against weighty opposition, and the left wing partnership had a poor afternoon. On the right Streets was a dashing and enthusiastic forward, while Purcell at times played very effectively, while Hick, the new centre forward, was alert and quick to try his shooting boots. But at the same time, there was hardly any method in the attack, and the combination of McDevitt and Houghton was badly missed. At the other end of the field Campbell's failure to deal with centres from the Charlton wingers led to a lot of trouble. Several of the Exeter players paid a deal more attention to the man than to the ball, and the policy, besides earning the displeasure of the referee, was an unprofitable one. It was a great afternoon for Lennox, who got all Charlton's five goals. There were 5,000 spectators.

Exeter City: Campbell; Lowton (captain) and Miller; Clarke, Dennington, and Christie; Purcell, Streets, Hick, C.Bastin, and Cameron.

Charlton Athletic:- Johnson; Smith and Langford; Searle, Hird (captain), and Pugsley; Wyper, Whitlow, Lennox, Rankin, and Horton.

Referee:- Mr R.O.Rees, of Swansea.

Streets opened the scoring in the seventh minute, his cross-shot hitting the foot of the upright and going into the net. Lennox equalised after half an hour's play. Exeter took the lead again in the second half, the ball being accidentally headed into the Charlton net by Smith, from a high centre by Cameron. Almost immediately from the kick off Charlton swept down the field, Lennox rounding off the move with a soft goal from close in. Twenty minutes after the change of ends Lennox gave Charlton the lead and completed his hat trick at the same time. Two more goals by Lennox rounded off a great afternoon for the Charlton centre-forward, the last goal coming after a brilliant dribble by Wyper, with Christie, Dennington and Miller all out of position.

City Reserves:- Sheffield, McDevitt, and Ditchburn; Holland; Noble and Phoenix;Bluck, Wade, Smith, Doncaster, and Death.

The Grecians got their goals first, Wade in 3 minutes and Doncaster in 25. Bath's reply came in the second half, Brittain scoring in 15 minutes, and the new winger, Parrish, three minutes later.
