Queens Park Rangers v Exeter City
Southern League
Exeter City v Ebbw Vale

Queens Park Rangers v Exeter City

Saturday, March 23rd 1929.

QUEEN'S PARK RANGERS 1 (Goddard) EXETER CITY 0

The weather was beautifully fine, and notwithstanding the counter attractions in other parts of the Metropolis, a crowd of 12,000 was in attendance at the start. Lowton lost the toss and Exeter faced the strong sun to begin with.

Queens Park Rangers: Cunningham; Sweetman and Pierce; McNab, Nixon, and Neil; Coward, J.C.Burns, Goddard, Rounce, and Whatmore.

Exeter City: Holland; Lowton and Miller; Sheffield, Dennington, and Clarke; Purcell, Houghton, Hick, Bastin, and Death.

Referee:- Mr E.C.Sambrook, of Swansea.

Goddard scored for the Rangers after twelve minutes, heading the ball home from a free kick by McNab from a position halfway between the touchline and the line of the penalty area. The Rangers, who were greatly superior at half back, had the best of the first half, although on the general run of the play Exeter did not deserve to be a goal behind. After the interval Exeter were superior as far as team-work was concerned, and their methods were more direct. Lowton, Purcell, Hick, and Houghton were the "stars" of the team.

Northampton and Crystal Palace, each with 42 points, are at the top of the League, followed by Queen's Park Rangers, Luton, Fulham and Charlton. Each of these clubs has at least 40 points. Plymouth Argyle, with a total of 38 points, are seventh.

At the "wrong" end of the table are Gillingham (25), Torquay (24), Norwich, and Newport (each 23), Merthyr (22), and Exeter City (21).

EXETER CITY RESERVES 5
EBBW VALE 0

This afternoon's Southern League match at St James's Park was notable for the fact that it marked the return to the game of Sam Mason, the City's Scottish centre half, who has been incapacitated since October through illness.

City Reserves:- Campbell; Pollard, Noble; Ditchburn, Mason, Christie; Bluck, Streets, Wade, Doncaster, and Cameron.

Ebbw Vale: Bow; Ireland, Oliver; Jones, Ellerington, Jenkins; C.Phillips, Atkins, J.Davies, N. Phillips, and R. Davies.

Referee:- Mr J.J.Hughes, of Plymouth.

Streets scored for Exeter after nine minutes. With Mason shaping strongly and distributing the ball with sound judgment the Exeter forwards were persistent and frequently dangerous. A centre from Bluck was headed goalwards by Mason, and Wade helped the ball into the net. In the second half two goals for the City and one by Mason set the seal on a very comfortable victory.
