Newport County v Exeter City
Saturday, April 20th 1929.

NEWPORT COUNTY 1 (Thomas)
EXETER CITY 1 (Cameron)

The weather was fine at Newport, but a stiff breeze blew down the field, and Exeter losing the toss, had this to face in the opening half. Death was unable to play for the City through an injury and Cameron partnered Bastin on the left wing. Wheeler replaced Reid for Newport.
Newport County:- Maidment; Anderson and Wheeler; S.Richardson, Nairn, and Riley; Wardell, Gittens, Pugh, Thomas, and Young.

Exeter City:- Holland; Lowton and Miller; Sheffield, Mason, and Dennington; Purcell, Clarke, Hick, Bastin, and Cameron.

Play was uninteresting, Newport being slightly the better side, and Exeter were unable to keep the ball on the ground in the face of the high wind. The City rearguard was hard pressed, and Thomas scored with a long dropping shot after 25 minutes, Holland misjudging the flight of the ball. Exeter were fortunate to escape defeat, for their efforts at scoring were ineffectual in the second half until practically the last kick of the game, when Cameron equalised direct from a corner. The only Exeter players to impress were the backs, and Bastin and Hick in the forward line. The attendance was 4,000.

EXETER CITY RESERVES 7
NEWPORT COUNTY RESERVES 1.

Hutchings, of Tiverton, was at outside left for the City Reserves in today's Southern League match at St James's Park with Newport Reserves, as Cameron had to travel with the first team to Newport, Death being injured.

City Reserves:- Campbell; Pollard and Noble; Phoenix, Ditchburn, and Christie; Bluck, Streets, Wade, Doncaster, and Hutchings.

Newport Reserves:- Blakemore; Reid and Hinton; Clifford, Watts, and Taylor; Harper, Ward, Hill, Whitton, and F.Forty.

The liveliness of Wade was a feature of the early play, as was the splendid constructive work of Ditchburn, and in fifteen minutes the combination of this pair resulted in Wade scoring with a header. Hill, also with a header, scored for the Ironsides after 31 minutes. Four goals were then obtained by the Grecians in as many minutes, Doncaster, Wade, Bluck, and Wade again finding the net.

Half-time:
City Reserves 5 Newport Reserves 1.

Newport had more of the game after the change of ends, but were not allowed to become really dangerous, whereas in spirited attacks by Exeter further goals were registered by Streets and Doncaster. Towards the close Doncaster found the net again from Hutchings's pass, but the goal was disallowed.

EXETER CITY NARROWLY BEATEN AT ST JAMES'S PARK
Game Decided By a Penalty Kick

Wednesday, April 24th 1929.

EXETER CITY 2  (Wade 2)
PLYMOUTH ARGYLE 3  (Leslie Bowden Pullen)

The Devon Professional Championship was won on Wednesday evening by Plymouth Argyle, who beat Exeter City (holders) in the final at St. James's Park. The game attracted 2,500 spectators, and much interesting play was seen. Plymouth were the more polished side, but the Exeter eleven, which included several of the reserves, did very well, and the match was only decided by a goal scored by Pullen from the penalty-spot for a handling infringement by Lowton.

Exeter City: Holland; Pollard and Lowton; Clarke, Ditchburn, and Christie; Phoenix, Streets, Wade, Doncaster, and Cameron.

Plymouth Argyle:- Craig; Bland and Price; Mackay, Pullen, and McKenzie; Healy, Forbes, Bowden, Leslie, and Black.

There was a lot of big kicking by the backs in the opening play, and in the eighth minute, when Craig had saved a good shot from Doncaster, and ball was quickly moved up the field by Healy, whose centre from the touchline caught Pollard and Lowton unprepared. Healy's centre went direct to Leslie, who put the ball past Holland with a cool low cross-shot.

Exeter Equalise and Gain the Lead.

The equaliser, by Wade, ten minutes later, was an unusual goal. Phoenix put the ball right across the field to Cameron, who returned it to the centre. It was headed in by Wade, but Craig caught the shot. The referee was on the spot, however, and ruled that the Argyle goalkeeper was standing behind the goal-line when he fielded the ball. Three minutes before the interval in a scrambling sort of attack by Exeter which looked like a chapter of fortunate accidents finished up with Wade, in front of the Argyle goal and close in, giving the Grecians the lead. It was short lived, however, for Mackay put Bowden clean through, and the Cornish centre forward gave Holland no chance with a flashing shot that rattled the rigging.
Half-time:
Exeter City 2 Plymouth Argyle 2.

Second Half.

In the tenth minute of the second half Lowton pulled a centre from Healy down with his hand, and Pullen scored with a model drive from the white spot.
