Match 26
27th January 1932,
Exeter City v Bournemouth

EXETER CITY 1 (HOUGHTON) BOURNEMOUTH 0.

Wednesday, January 27th 1932.

Bournemouth and Boscombe Athletic travelled to Exeter today to oppose the City in the Football League match postponed from last Saturday, when the "Cherries" were engaged at Sheffield with the Wednesday in the Cup competition. The party from Bournemouth journeyed by road, during the trip in less than three hours. For the first time in his long association with the Bournemouth club, Eyre was "dropped" today. He had a bad game against his old club, The Wednesday, and it was decided to give a trial to E. Williams, secured recently from Merthyr. The City had Armfield at outside-right again, on recovery from a leg injury. There was a "gate" of 3,000 at the kick-off.

Exeter pressed persistently on the left, and a cross shot by Barber missed the goal by inches only, with McSevich beaten. Hayward's skill in intercepting was the cause of many Exeter moves breaking down, while other just petered out in a very disappointing fashion, Varco's quick shooting being too haphazard. Gray came across smartly to Miller's assistance when L.Williams got away for the visitors, and came Exeter's best attack so far. Doncaster sped up the wing and centred across the goalmouth. Armfield closed in and challenged McSevich, but was not quite quick enough, and the goalkeeper jumped up and hit the ball away. It ran to Purcell, who shot fiercely along the turf, and Whitehouse saved what would have been a certain goal by throwing himself at the ball and turning it around the post. McSevich saved two shots from Childs, and Armfield drove over the angle of the goal. Exeter continued to attack, and the Bournemouth goal had a series of marvellous escapes, although Varco's shooting was atrocious.

Half-time:
Exeter City 0 Bournemouth 0.

Barber was knocked out in a collision, but he quickly resumed, and when Purcell put in a shot McSevich was beaten, but the ball was returned into the field by the Bournemouth cross-bar. Exeter's long awaited opening goal came in the twelfth minute of the second half, a low centre from Armfield going through to Houghton, who was unmarked, and who had no difficulty in finding the net with a powerful and quick cross shot. Then a header by Doncaster hit the cross-bar, and Exeter generally made rings round the opposition but could not increase their advantage.
