Match 32
5th March 1932
Bristol Rovers (h)

Southern League
Bristol Rovers Res. (a)

March 5th 1932.
EXETER CITY 1 BRISTOL ROVERS 0.

This was an arduous match, and for a long time a very anxious one. After Exeter had made a bright opening the Rovers were the better team for quite a while, and it was not till the interval was fast approaching that the Grecians showed their best form again. The second half saw the City forwards playing stronger football. The halves and backs had been very sound all along. Much good play was developed by the Bristol forwards in the opening period, but after ends were changed, apart from one header by Routledge which struck the bar, they were never dangerous. The winning goal was scored after 68 minutes by Woodward, after a combined move by Roberts and Barber had placed the ball into the goalmouth. Varco prevented the Rovers' backs from clearing, and Whitlow flicked the ball to Woodward, who moved in and crashed it into the net from a seemingly impossible angle.

Roberts in his first home appearance for the City played a fine game, and he will be a very valuable acquisition to the club in their fight for promotion. When at full strength again the City should go ahead famously.

Exeter City: Davies; Gray, Miller; Clarke, Childs, Barber; Woodward, Varco, Whitlow, Roberts, Doncaster.

Bristol Rovers: Calvert; Russell, Smith; Black, Stoddart, Townrow;
Oakton, Routledge, Cook, Dix, Young.

The attendance at today's match was just over seven thousand. Bristol Rovers did not bring as many supporters with them as they usually do.
